PLC Old Collegians Donate New Rowing Boat PLC Old Collegians number more than 13,000, and many hold positions of note in companies, hospitals, court rooms, science labs and boardrooms throughout the world. They include Olympians, award-winning artists, humanitarians, teachers, economists and business owners. Many are also parents, sisters, aunties, cousins and grandparents of current students. In fact, nearly 20 per cent of current PLC students have an Old Collegian family connection! Old Collegians form an integral part of our wider PLC community, and continue to give back to PLC
by supporting and inspiring our current students through mentoring programmes, bursaries and other financial support. 'The Old Girl'Today we celebrated the latest contribution from our Old Collegians’ Association to the School – a new Quadruple Scull Boat named 'The Old Girl'. Christened by Old Collegians’ Association president, Jennie Deykin and Rowing Coach, David Milne, 'The Old Girl' is a welcome addition to the fleet for current and future PLC rowers. The PLC Old Collegians’ Association donated $24,000 to the PLC Argyle Club
to purchase the new boat. A Celebration to Remember It was wonderful to watch our current students help PLC OCA representatives and our senior rowers celebrate the occasion, complete with a ceremonial champagne bottle smashed across the hull and canons of streamers.

Thank You Our sincere thanks to the PLC OCA for their ongoing commitment and support. I would encourage all families to continue supporting the work of the Old Collegians’ Association, particularly by attending next week’s annual PLC OCA Art Exhibition, which is the group’s major fundraiser and always a fabulous event. Exams and NAPLANThank you to all the staff who have overseen the running of examinations in Years 10, 11 and 12 and NAPLAN tests in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is always a stressful and anxious time for students. Despite some nationwide hiccups with the NAPLAN testing, the assessments have run smoothly. Good luck to all the girls, who will receive their exam results next week. NAPLAN results are released later in the year. - Chris Robinson, Acting Principal

HBF Run for a Reason
PLC are running for Red Cross RefugeesThis Sunday 19 May, a team of PLC runners will be taking part in the HBF Run for a Reason, raising funds for refugees fleeing crisis and political strife. Finding suitable living areas for refugees will be one of the leading concerns within the next few decades for reasons such as climate displacement, corruption in governments, increasing populations and reasons many of us can’t begin to imagine. All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross refugee branch to support refugees in the local community. Donate to support PLC runners here.

NAPLANThis week, our Years 3 and 5 students sat NAPLAN. These assessments have existed for most of my time as a Head of Junior School. Over this time, I have seen significant improvements in NAPLAN and have been informed that the online version we are using this year will provide us with faster and more accurate results. NAPLAN does provide a very small snapshot of your daughters academic progress, however, her class teacher would have a much greater and in-depth knowledge of this. Students, like the rest of us, have good and bad days. I have seen many schools using precious class time to solely prepare for NAPLAN. This inordinate time spent preparing does improve results, however, in my experience this simply artificially inflates results. Every second of your daughter's time in class is precious and should be used on in-depth learning, not just preparing for NAPLAN. Again, any inflation of scores are artificial, and when the work becomes cognitively taxing, it is in-depth and complex learning and thought that is required. I have seen many students through their journey from Junior School to Year 12, and the highest achieving NAPLAN students very rarely achieved the highest grades in Year 12. I have no doubt that is due to the more complex thinking required
in the upper years of schooling and further into University.

As we approach the end of the exam period for the Years 10, 11 and 12 girls, there is a tangible feeling of relief in the air. The girls have been diligent in their study, and in their approach to these exams. I have been impressed with the overall preparation and attitude the girls have displayed over this period. I wish the girls who have their final exams over these last two days every success, and I hope the rest of the girls enjoy this small window of down-time before they throw themselves back in to their studies next week. Define Me Day The Year 10 girls have had some excellent opportunities presented to them over
their Define Me day. They listened to a guest speaker talk about the challenges they faced living as a homeless person, and then had an opportunity to look at the effect and power of the community to make changes, under the guidance of the Red Cross team in the Lighthouse. Develop Me Day The Year 12 girls have their Develop Me day on Monday. They will participate in activities focused on managing their wellbeing, personal finances, cars or health. The girls have enthusiastically embraced these opportunities, and I look forward to hearing their feedback at the pajama party. PJ Party As a final respite after exams, we have invited the Year 12s to attend our annual PJ Party, on Monday evening, after their Develop Me Day. This is a time for the girls the enjoy some pizza and a movie, and to leave all the stress of the exam period behind them. I look forward enjoying the movie and a chat with them. NAPLAN There have been some issues with the online delivery of NAPLAN this year and these problems have been closely followed and reported in the press. You should have received a communication from the School outlining the issues and the
approach we have taken. We have been working closely with the authorities and will continue to ensure that our girls have every opportunity to perform at their best. Any problems that were identified in the Writing section are under review from NAPLAN and we await their findings and proposal for rectifying the issues that have been identified.
