First AWF Project in Somaliland to fight Water Stress and Build Climate Change Resilience

On February 21, 2017, for the first time in its history, the AWF launched a workshop to officially kick-start the Water Resources Management and Investment Plan project for Somaliland. This €3-million grant will support this project to build resilience to climate change and reduce water stress in Somaliland. The launching ceremony, opened by the Honorable Hussein Abdi Boos Minister of Water Resources. Ultimately, the AWF Water Resources Management and Investment Plan project will improve the management of water resources and attract investments for better water infrastructure and services in this country particularly vulnerable to drought and climatic conditions. The local population and economy will greatly benefit from this project, particularly in the pastoralism which is one of the key sectors of the Somaliland economic growth. More

 

AWF Contributed to the Ghana's first ever Poo Power Plant

Ghana’s first ever Poo Power plant festively opened this March 15th by Safi Sana. Relatively new on the market, this company is the first in the world to launch a complete circular industry, converting human waste (urine and excrement) combined with refuse from organic food markets and abattoirs into electric power, clean water for irrigation and compost. The water and compost are subsequently applied for the cultivation of vegetable seedlings and fresh herbs in Safi Sana’s own greenhouses. All the factory’s proceeds are marketed locally. More

AWF Supports Resilience to Climate Change and Reducing Vulnerability to Floods in Mozambique

On 15th February 2017, the Inhambane Province has been devastated by Tropical Storm Dineo that made landfall, causing flooding and strong winds, severely affecting the local population. Mozambique is regularly affected by severe floods. This is caused by a combination of insufficient storm water drainage, river overflowing and sea intrusion during storms. The  AWF and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique signed a €1.6 million grant agreement for a feasibility study on Urban Sanitation, Drainage and Solid Waste Management in Chimoio and Inhambane. This project will contribute to improve livelihood conditions and climate change resilience for the 310,000 citizens of the two Municipalities. This will be achieved by reducing the risk of flooding and improving the public health.More

AWF supports AMCOW in Enhancing Online Water & Sanitation Reporting In Africa

Ahead of the upcoming 28th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union holding 30th and 31st January 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) has activated the online portal of the continent’s water sector and sanitation reporting system. The new Pan African Monitoring and Reporting System serves as a platform to report progress on the implementation of the AU Heads of States and Government Sharm el Sheikh Commitments to accelerate the achievement of the Africa Water Vision 2025, as well as the global high level political commitments on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on water and sanitation. Considered as one of the most ambitious attempts at tracking sectoral progress, the system represents Africa’s readiness to learn from past mistakes in monitoring the implementation of the MDGs as well as efforts being made to attain Africa’s Agenda 2063. AWF Celebrates World Water Day 2017 : Turning Waste Water into a Source of Wealth

AWF and the African Development Bank (AfDB) celebrated together the World Water Day 2017 under the theme "Waste Water". The AfDB is adopting an integrated urban water management approach to promote a holistic vision of water and sanitation management. The management of liquid and solid waste is thus viewed as productive and income-generating activities. The AfDB and the AWF are currently funding programs using this transformative and innovative approach in Africa.More
