Awards and Recognition Event 2019PEAK Performance, Team Player Award: Comprehensive Care Treatment CoordinatorsSharon Maier, Shelley Bissell, Janice Dominguez, Coby Kwasney, and Carol Legassick Great teams don’t just happen. It takes great players to come together to achieve greatness. The School of Dentistry values the contributions made by support staff, and through its awards program, officially recognizes the work people do in maintaining the day-to-day operations while striving for excellence. “We are very honoured to be chosen for the award. Being recognized for our contribution is certainly appreciated. It is rewarding for us to see all the planning we do to help the students meet their requirements to graduate. It is truly a team effort from all the departments to get the patients the care they need and help the clinic run smoothly. It makes us work that much smarter and more efficiently to continue to live up to receiving the award!” PEAK Performance, Fostering an Environment and Culture of Innovation Award: Kari RarickInnovation and inclusion are fundamental to our culture, an environment that supports creative thinking and advances efforts to extract economic and social value from knowledge, and, in doing so, generates new or improved products, services, or processes. “It's very humbling to be rewarded for simply doing my job but I honestly find it easy to be positive, creative, and innovative when I have the support of the amazing team here. I will cherish this award and all that came with it for the rest of my life!” W.W. Wood Award: Dr. Monica GibsonThe Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD) established the W.W. Wood Awards for “Excellence in Dental Education” to commemorate Dr. Bill Wood whose academic career exemplified dedication to research, teaching, and service. “I was surprised but honoured to win the award. It is encouraging for young faculty to win these awards because it reinforces that what we are doing is good, fosters a great work ethic, and encourages us to do even better.” Excellence in Leadership Award: Dr. Doris LunardonThis award is specifically designed to recognize outstanding leaders or leadership teams for their awareness of and attention to issues and concerns that impact the quality of the work and learning environment and for their significant demonstration of exemplary leadership. “I am very grateful to those very kind individuals who supported my nomination, however, I feel this is an award that recognizes the hard work of the many dedicated individuals who every day demonstrate their commitment to the School of Dentistry.” Gibb Clinical Teaching Award: Dr. Trudy AuCoin“It is an honor to be nominated and recognized for something that you are passionate about and love to do,” says Aucoin. “It is a privilege for me to teach at the School of Dentistry. The success of our clinic is a result of the amazing team that I have the pleasure to work with. "I have had excellent mentoring and support as I developed my skills as a clinical instructor. I appreciate all the work that has gone into the nomination and selection process. Thank you for making me smile!” The Gibb awards are the highest internal teaching awards in the School of Dentistry. Gibb Teaching Scholar Award: Dr. Bernie Linke“Being recognized by my peers is humbling,” says Linke, adding the main reason he came to the university from private practice, was to teach and pass on his skills. “This award is a restorative team award because in many ways it’s your whole group that makes you successful.” Linke says his main motivation comes from seeing the school continually try to get better in all areas - whether its teaching, the clinic or improving the student experience. “This commitment as a school keeps you coming back and this started at the top with Dr. Major and now permeates down to the rest of us,” he says. “Students in the end benefit from everyone’s diligence.” The Gibb awards are the highest internal teaching awards in the School of Dentistry. 2019 sock fight breaks records!December 2nd saw 76 students (and 6 faculty!) lob socks at each other to raise awareness for the need for socks in winter. Tunes blasted, laughs abounded, and the referee got in some good yelling. There was some first-rate fun had all around. The event attracted several news outlets (see CTV's story here: edmonton.ctvnews.ca) to further spread awareness and, most importantly, raised 9,374 pairs of socks (or in kind outerwear) to donate to the Boyle MacCauley Health Centre (home to the SHINE clinic)! To date over the five years of the annual sock drive, we have collected over 26,700 pairs of socks! The fight was won by the DH students (mostly DH 2022), although the competition was pretty fierce. However, the real winners were DDS 2021. With each class competing to collect the most socks, they collected 4001 pairs.
