Welcome aboard!

This week, thirteen GP registrars began their training journey at NTGPE's orientation in Darwin. The three-day intensive program featured a number of core topics, consultation skills and great local tips to help them with the term ahead.

Orientation also included the first of three compulsory face-to-face cultural education days and a remote specific orientation day for GP registrars starting their first remote placement this term.

We wish them all the best with their first GP and remote placements.

New workshop for GP registrars who have completed their training

While new GP registrars were being inducted into the program, a group of eleven GP registrars who have recently or about to complete their GP training, attended NTGPE's inaugural completion of training (COT) workshop in Darwin. The workshop is designed to highlight all the opportunities available in the NT and encourage them to stay on and consider long-term employment in the NT. Feedback from the day was very positive.

To end a fantastic day, NT PHN kindly hosted a dinner for the group at Q Bar & Brasserie on the Avenue. NTGPE look forward to celebrating with all the 2018 fellows at the annual NTGPE awards ceremony in Darwin on November 16, 2018.

Changes to the childhood immunisation schedule

From 1 July 2018, the childhood immunisation schedule was updated and changes were made to the vaccines given at the 12 and 18 month schedule points.

Changes to early childhood vaccinations include:

  • a pneumococcal vaccine will be offered to all children at 12 months of age (moved from 6 months of age). Clinical experts recommended this change to reduce disease in children and improve protection in all age groups through community immunity.
  • a new vaccine protecting against 4 types (ACWY) of meningococcal disease (up from 1) will be offered to all children at 12 months of age.
  • a vaccine protecting against Haemophilus influenzae type b will be offered to all children aged 18 months of age.
