JFC Construction Update - Construction Progress - Issue 44 - 29 June 2020

New 30km/hr speed limit for the City Centre

From the 30th of June, a new road speed limit of 30km/hr will come into force in the City Centre.  Around 600 roads in the Auckland region will have their speed limit reduced as part of Auckland Transport’s Safe Speeds programme and Speed Limits Bylaw 2019.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Read our construction update to see what has been achieved and what is coming up on the Karangahape Road Enhancements project.

Symonds Street to Queen Street

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue with underground services installation and drainage in the section between Liverpool Street and Queen Street

  • Continue demolition of the existing traffic island

Upper Queen Street to Mercury Lane

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Lay cycleway asphalt at the Upper Queen Street corner
  • Move existing traffic light to new kerbline location
  • Demolish the remaining sections of the existing traffic island
  • Soil testing for low level planting in rain garden

Upcoming night works what to expect:

Night works continue early this week at the Upper Queen Street corner.  These night works are taking place in the evening due to lower pedestrian and vehicle numbers as changes to traffic management are required.  To do this safely there will be changes to vehicle and pedestrian access during these works and diversions will be in place.

Works include moving the existing traffic light to a temporary drum so that work on the kerbline can continue, relocating existing infrastructure out of the carriageway, and finishing the demolition of the remaining traffic island. This work is expected to take three nights to complete, starting from 19:30 to 04:30 each night.

Please note there will be intermittent medium to high volume noise, i.e. grinding but we will endeavour to have noisy works completed by 10:30pm

Mercury Lane to West Terrace

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue block work in rain garden near the Mercury Lane corner
  • Continue construction in the carriageway and the outer edge of the footpath
  • Continue laying cycleway and kerbline
  • Line marking of temporary loading zone near the Day Street Pedestrian crossing

West Terrace temporary road closure - planned start 1 July 2020:

Work to construct the speed table across West Terrace is planned to start 1 July, subject to traffic management approval.  Due to the narrow nature of West Terrace, a temporary road closure is required to construct the speed table. There will be no access to West Terrace via Karangahape Road.

Vehicle access will be provided for residents only via Galatos Street.

Pedestrian access from Karangahape Road to West Terrace will be unavailable during working hours. However in the evenings, we will reduce our working space/fencing and make pedestrian access available.

During the day, pedestrian access to Karangahape Road from West Terrace will be via East Street and Galatos Street.  This work is expected to take 6 weeks.

Overbridge

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue to install fabricated bus shelters on overbridge
  • Commence glass panel installation on newly installed bush shelters

Hereford Street to Howe Street

The traffic management plans allow for work on one side of Howe Street at a time.  We have exposed the existing services and have also commenced installation of new ducting in this location.  Asset owners have relocated services at this location and this activity is ongoing.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue relocation of services by asset owners at this location
  • Commence installation of street light and traffic light at permanent location

CYCLEWAY - SOFT OPENING:

During the works, sections of the newly constructed cycleway have remained closed for safety reasons as they did not link up along the street. However, as works are progressing we can facilitate a soft opening of the cycleway now instead of opening it fully at the end of the project.  In conjunction with AT and Bike Auckland we have and will continue to open sections of the cycleway - there will be temporary signage and road markings to help guide cyclists on along the cycleway.  Please follow these signs and dismount when required

While this "soft opening" will allow cyclists to utilise sections of the cycleway that do not have active construction in them, it is important to note that construction work will take place later at some of these ‘open’ cycleway sections to finalise construction.

In these instances, we will have the relevant traffic management in place to indicate these work locations but we will endeavour to maintain cycleway access.

Temporary road markings are completed on the eve of the opening.

The following are planned sections to be opened - dates will be confirmed in the upcoming newsletters:

  • Ponsonby to Hereford Street:  Complete
  • Hereford Street to Howe Street (Dismount before Howe Street): Complete
  • Overbridge North Side: Complete
  • Upper Queen Street to Mercury Lane:  TBC
  • Overbridge South Side: TBC
