Women Lead on Rescue Watercraft Skill DevelopmentWhen the indefatigable Nixy Krite came to Andrew Mackellar, RWC (Jetski) Coordinator at Surf Life Saving Sydney, with a six-page proposal for a training program to develop and retain female RWC operators, he knew he couldn’t say no. New South Wales Surf Lifesavers Honoured on Australia DaySurf Life Saving NSW members have been recognised for their outstanding efforts and service to Surf Life Saving in the 2021 Australia Day Honours List and in local council awards.
Surf Lifesavers Thanked for Australia Day RescuesVolunteer surf lifesavers that patrolled NSW beaches over the heatwave conditions and Australia Day celebrations have been praised for keeping beachgoers safe during one of the busiest weekends on the coastline on record. What the Surf?! PodcastThis month on What The Surf!? hosts Harold and Simon are joined by Donna Wishart from the SLSNSW Media Team. The guys chat about State Champs, talk to Nat Browning from Broulee Surfers SLSC, Cheryl McCarthy from Bermagui SLSC and Nicholas White from Redhead SLSC. They discuss the incredible keg rescue on the Gold Coast and have a lot of laughs along the way. Drone Spots Large Group of Sharks at Evans HeadA large school of whaler sharks (e.g. spinner, dusky, bull sharks) was spotted at Evans Head on the state’s far north coast late last month. A Surf Life Saving UAV operator conducting aerial surveillance on behalf of the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) spotted the group of around 40 sharks just offshore at the popular holiday spot. Surf Life Saving NSW Receives a Wave of Hand SanitiserThanks to an anonymous donation and the assistance of Good360 and JJ Lawson, Surf Life Saving Clubs across NSW have received boxes of free hand sanitiser to assist with preventing the spread of COVID-19. Bodyboarder Saved During Winter Training SessionElouera Surf Life Saving Club members Andrew Sharp and Nathan Neale were recently awarded the SLSNSW Rescue of the Month Award for July 2020 for the after-hours rescue of a bodyboarder in Cronulla. Near Drowning Leads to Launch of Innovative Learn to Swim ProgramTwo rescues performed by off-duty surf lifesavers, which saved the lives of eight men from Western Sydney, were the inspiration for a new learn to swim program that was officially launched on the Australia Day long weekend in Cronulla. Near Drowning at Diamond BeachOn Saturday 16 January, lifeguards and surf lifesavers attended Diamond Beach, on the NSW Lower North Coast, where a 35-year-old male was in trouble in the water about two kilometres north of the red and yellow flags. “I would like to commend the efforts of our young lifeguards today, and to all the lifeguards and volunteers patrolling up and down the NSW coast helping keep our beaches safe," said Nathan De Rooy, Director of Lifesaving, Lower North Coast Branch. #StateChamps21, Proudly Supported by Your local clubThe NSW Surf Life Saving Championships proudly supported by Your local club returns to Lake Macquarie for 2021. All the action will kick off from Thursday 25 February for the Age Championships, with water events held at Swansea Belmont SLSC and beach events held at Redhead SLSC. All rounds will be broadcast live on free to air TV from 12pm – 2pm AEDT, with rounds 1-4 broadcast on 9GO! and rounds 5-6 LIVE on Channel 9. Entries for the 2021 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships are now open. Early Bird Entries will close on 28 February, before Normal Entries close on 29 March. |
