This week we plan to move to the intersection of Symonds Street and Karangahape Road to complete the new street light and traffic light installation, and construct the new pram crossing.

To undertake drainage activities, this week, Cobden Street will temporarily be down to one lane. Two way access will be allowed via a signalised stop/go operation. During this time, there will be no right turn into Cobden Street from Karangahape Road, but vehicles exiting Cobden Street can turn either left or right at all times.

Upcoming section - Overbridge to Pitt Street:

The section between the Overbridge and Pitt Street is expected to commence end of November 2020, pending traffic management approval.

Change in temporary traffic management - Day Street

In order for the speed table to be constructed, Day Street intersection with Karangahape Road will be closed for approximately two weeks in early December.  Access to Day Street will be via Hopetoun Street only during these works.  Footpath access along Karangahape Road will be maintained around our works.

Service trenches across carriageway:

Part of the upgrade includes traffic lights, street lights and future proofing ducting, and stormwater connections across the carriageway of Karangahape Road.  The enabling works are complete and the trenches commence this week.  These works require sections of Karangahape Road to be closed, with detours in place for vehicles.

Upcoming night works - what to expect:

Commence service trenches at:

  • Queen Street and Karangahape Road intersection
  • The mid-block pedestrian crossing, between Queen Street and Pitt Street

Works continue up to 23 November 2020  from 19:30 - 06:00.

These works will be undertaken at night when traffic volumes are low. A change in lane layout will be required while this work is taking place, however vehicle and footpath access will be maintained around the work.

Please note there will be intermittent medium to high volume noise - saw cutting, excavation, trucks and diggers moving and loading heavy equipment.

Upcoming works - Asphalt Resurfacing:  Pitt Street to Symonds Street

Final resurfacing of the road is part of the completion of the enhancement work currently being undertaken.

The resurfacing work is being split into several phases: the section between Pitt Street and Queen Street is the first phase, and Queen Street to Symonds Street is the second phase.  The remaining section from Pitt Street to Ponsonby Road will be done near the end of the enhancement project.

This resurfacing process is known as "mill and fill".  The existing asphalt surface is "milled" off to achieve an even surface, removes old trench marks  and "ghost" road-markings.  This is then replaced with a new asphalt layer (fill) on the entire width of the road.  Once this is complete the final road markings will be done.

Heavy machinery is used to do this work.  It is anticipated that this work will be completed over a couple of weeks.

These works require sections of Karangahape Road to be closed, with detours in place for vehicles. Karangahape Road is a main arterial route during the day and therefore these works will be undertaken at night when traffic volumes are low. Every morning works will be finished in sections to ensure there is a trafficable surface during the day.

During the day on street parking will be removed daily on the hours prior to the works commencement to enable the machine access.

It is important to note that vehicle and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the day.

This work is expected to commence in November and will take a few nights to complete - the details will be shared in upcoming newsletters.
