This day aims to achieve gender equality and empowerment in science through the full and equal access to, and participation in science for women and girls. The theme for the 2019 summit was ‘Investment in Women and Girls in Science for Inclusive Green Growth’. Topics under discussion at the United Nations summit included:
Two of the items from the outcomes document really caught my attention:
These are both things which we have a long history of celebrating and fostering at PLC, but this also provides important reminders of things to embrace as we look to future curriculum revisions. The outcomes report from the summit sets all of us an overarching stretch goal. It highlights the work in closing the scientific gender gap, which is still required.
Through my PhD research, which involved talking with secondary students about engaging in science, I heard first-hand girls describe that despite achieving academic success in science, they still felt like outsiders. Feeling comfortable to voice your opinion and challenging perceptions is such a vital part of the inclusive journey in science. It is through experiences at PLC such as the IB Diploma Extended Essay, the Group Four Project and the Year 9 Defining Project that the girls are provided the opportunity to voice their opinion and challenge the norm. It is only through the ongoing engagement in activities such as these, where the opportunity to create, experiment and question with the aim of doing things differently is central, that the glass ceiling of science will truly disappear. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Deputy Principal Year 12 Parents Coffee MorningDate: Tuesday 5 March Year 11 Parent FunctionDate: Thursday 7 March International Women's Day BreakfastDate: Friday 8 March PLC Boarding Parents' DinnerDate: Friday 22 March PLC Parents Tennis MorningDate: Tuesday 9 April 2019 Boarders MarketDate: Friday 12 April PLC OCA Art ExhibitionDate: Friday 24 May - Sunday 26 May Father/Daughter Dinner DanceDate: Thursday 22 August A Meaningful Life"Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." People are encouraged to be relevant in the workplace, school and even personal life. The Oxford English Dictionary defines "relevance" as "the state of being closely connected or appropriate to the matter in hand." When Jesus walked the earth, he was relevant in the topics he addressed and the way he related to the crowds, but this isn’t what defined his ministry. Nor was it only because of the laws he challenged or his teachings. What defined Jesus was that he lived a meaningful life. He lived with a purpose. He reached out to people in need and treated people living on the fringes with respect. He was a man of peace, willing to die to bring peace on earth. Let’s have a meaningful impact on our world! - Rev Manie Strydom The Smith Family Student2Student Information Session
