Here at Looney Labs, we love Halloween so much that it's a company holiday! If you love Halloween, too, why not plan a party? We have three games that would be great for a Halloween party. Cthulhu Fluxx is the most complicated version of Fluxx, so that would be for a more experienced gaming group. Monster Fluxx is a great family-oriented version with all the classic monsters. And Zombie Fluxx is a fan favorite, and has the distinction of being the first Fluxx to contain Creepers...and wow does it have a lot of them!!! So invite some friends over, put on some tunes (we love The Monster Mash), grab some pumpkins for carving, dress up as your favorite Looney Labs characters (one of the Doctors? Deanna Troi? Wash? Nature Girl? The Emperor?), and have a Happy Halloween!

This month, we are re-visiting one of our artists, Derek Ring, because we decided to revisit the art on one of our games, Monster Fluxx — and when better to do that than the spooky month of October?

We first published Monster Fluxx five years ago, but Andy was never really satisfied with the artwork. Even so, the game has sold well enough to warrant reprinting, so last year Andy pushed for an artwork overhaul. Derek himself had many ideas about how to improve upon his previous efforts and was eager to work on the updates.

The game itself hasn’t changed at all. (Well, except for fixing a couple of glaring typos.) Even the box looks the same. So these revisions won’t matter to most people. But collectors should be advised that the illustrations have changed, in some cases quite a bit. Shown above are a few before and after examples.

PAX Unplugged

Looney Labs will have a booth and two demo tables with ALL the fun! Kristin, Andy, and the Looney Labs crew will be handing out promo cards, signing autographs, demoing games, showing off cool new prototypes, (hopefully) creating a new Fluxx in front of a live audience, and selling all 22 versions of Fluxx, Pinny Arcade pins, and much more! Come play Chrononauts, Zendo, Pyramid Arcade, Get the MacGuffin, and ALL the Fluxxes with the Looneys!

PAX Unplugged is a new addition to the Penny Arcade line of conventions. While most of their conventions are more video game focussed, this one is geared exclusively to tabletop games. Last year was its inaugural year and a huge success! Other conventions in this line include PAX West (formerly called PAX Prime), PAX South, PAX East, PAX Australia, and PAX-DEV.

Pensacon

Kristin and Andy will be gaming Guests of Honor at Pensacon. Though it’s too early for specifics, they will undoubtedly be available to play games, show off prototypes, and sign autographs. They may also be giving talks or holding other events as well. Stay tuned for details!

Founded in 2013, Pensacon is the premiere comic book and pop culture convention serving Pensacola and the Gulf Coast. The event will feature cosplaying, an official qualifier for the Catan National Championships, a short film festival, game show nights, and autograph and photo opportunities with an impressive line-up of celebrity guests. Some of these guests include Summer Glau from Firefly, Garrett Wang from Star Trek: Voyager, Colin Baker and Catherine Tate from Doctor Who, and Jonathan Frakes from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Q: I have both Star Trek Fluxxes and the bridge pack, but I can’t find any special instructions for combining them. Anything I should know?

A:  Here are some clarifications that should help:

• If it says you need a Phaser, the Enterprise, a Computer, a Malfunction, a Transporter, or Romulans, then either deck’s version of that card will do, regardless of what is pictured.

• If the card calls for any Captain, you need either Kirk or Picard. Yes, Spock and others became captains later, but in this scenario, they don’t have that rank yet.

• Kirk and Picard can steal any Keeper with the Starfleet officer icon, except the other Captain. They're both commanding officers, so even though they are from different eras, if somehow (ok, it's time travel) they're on the same mission, then either can order any crew member to join them. As for who out ranks who between the Captains, well, Kirk has a lot of seniority...

• Fully redundant New Rule cards simply replace each other when played. For example, both decks include Wormhole, but if the second gets played it pushes out the first, it does not become a double Wormhole. Similarly, Double Agenda contradicts Triple Agenda and vice versa.
