The campus is, once again, renewed with energy, laughter and stories of the holidays just gone and the term ahead. Exams Commence Next WeekNext week our Years 10, 11 and 12 girls begin their examinations. These exams are important as indicators for potential future performance. It will provide the girls with insight into areas they are achieving well at and areas for future development. Exam Study Skills ResourceOur 2017 Academic Captain, Alex Cowan created an incredible resource for her Year Group that I shared with the girls this morning. It provides general information on exam preparation, along with subject-specific tips. I hope parents and students find it of use. Alex’s final piece of advice is particularly relevant... FeedbackWhile summative (exam type) feedback provides helpful information regarding progress, formative (ongoing) feedback has proved again and again to be one of the most critical elements of academic success for students. Parent-Teacher-Student InterviewsThank you to the teaching staff for hosting our parent-teacher-student interviews on Monday and Tuesday, after school, for girls in Years 7 - 10. Thanks also to the Property team for setting up our new venue to host these meetings. I’ve heard great feedback about our new format. In addition to the Big Day In, our girls in Years 4, 5 and 6 are attending regular Science lessons with specialists in the Senior School laboratories. We commenced the term with an Anzac Service, led by our Head Prefects. The students showed great respect for the occasion and significance of the event. AchievementsI am constantly impressed with the many and various achievements of our students. I have enjoyed acknowledging them in various ways, including at Assemblies (for those achievements at a State, National or International level). Recognition AwardsOur students also achieve amazing things in class, and around the School, every day. When setting goals last term, I spoke about working towards personal bests. When someone achieves something in class or at School, I believe it should be acknowledged. Therefore, from the Assembly in Week 3, we will be presenting Recognition Awards to acknowledge the achievements of our amazing students. This is not every achievement and success, but ones the teachers want to highlight. Parents will be informed of the recognition and will be invited to attend the relevant assembly. Mothers' DayNext week, we look forward to welcoming so many mums to the school in the lead up to Mother’s Day. The Early Learning Mothers' Day events held next week (see dates section below) and the whole-school Mothers' Day Breakfast breakfast on Friday 10 May are small way of recognising the amazing work PLC mums do for all the students and the School. If you have not done so yet, book your ticket to the Mothers' Day Breakfast here. Junior School Walk for Water Challenge - Friday 17 MayThe annual event, led by the Year 11 IB Diploma students, provides the opportunity for Years 4 - 6 students to engage in global awareness and to become water wise. Students walk 3 km without water, then 3 km carrying a filled 2L milk container of water that symbolises the daily process of accessing water to be used for everyday living needs such as washing, cleaning and drinking. Permission slips will be distributed and returned through classroom teachers. - Mr Richard Wright, Head of Junior School JUNIOR SCHOOL EVENTSJunior School Assembly Years 1 to 6 – hosted by Year 5 Date: Friday 3 May Kindy Mothers' Day Celebration Date: Tuesday 7 May Pre-Kindy Mothers' Day Celebration Date: Wednesday 8 May Big Day In Junior STEM Day (Year 5 and 6) Date: Wednesday 8 May Pre-Primary Mothers' Day Celebration Date: Friday 10 May Welcome BackWelcome to Term 2! I hope that you have had a restful and rejuvenating break, and that you have come to school full of energy and enthusiasm for the term ahead. RemindersI want to take the opportunity to pass on a few reminders as we head into our winter terms. Winter UniformFirstly, because of the variability of the weather and the likelihood that we will still have some warm days before the real change to winter, the school uniform will remain in summer mode until mid-term break. After mid-term break all the girls will be expected to have made the change to their full winter uniform. Inter-House Cross CountrySecondly, we have our Inter-House Cross Country event tomorrow (Friday 3 May) from 1.30 pm - 3.30 pm at City Beach Oval. All girls are expected to be involved; either as serious runners, less serious runners, even less serious walkers or helpers on the day. It is generally a day that both staff and students find very enjoyable. Parents are invited to watch and support the girls. It is generally a day that both staff and students find very enjoyable. Parents are invited to watch and support the girls. At lunchtime, the girls will be taken from PLC to City Beach Oval and returned to PLC after the event. If you wish to take you daughter directly from City Beach Oval, then please ensure that the Deputy Heads of Senior School, Victoria Kelleher (Years 7 & 8), Lynne Jones (Years 9 & 10) and Rebecca Payne (Years 11 & 12) have been informed. Students will also need to see Victoria, Lynne and Rebecca at the event before leaving. New Intimate Image LawsWe have received an information update from the WA Government Department of Justice with regards to the new Intimate Image Laws, which came into effect on 15 April. This is an important issue for adolescents and their use of technology. If you would like more information about this issue, please click here. It is a timely reminder of the serious consequences that are attached to the misuse of digital technology and images. Parents, if you can initiate a discussion with your daughter on this issue, then it can help her to be aware of the pitfalls and hopefully ensure that any decisions she makes about the use of her phone, and associated images, is informed. Utilising the Lighthouse During Exam PeriodOur Years 11 and 12 students are about to begin their exams and many of them will find this time to be stressful. Over time we have seen that a number of approaches can be of benefit and help them to manage this anxiety or stress. The girls will have been informed that the Lighthouse has been made available for them over the exam period as a place to relax, de-stress and achieve a sense of calm, both before and after their exams. It will be a study-free area, devoted to their mental wellbeing. I hope that the girls will take advantage of this over the exam period. Emily Lockhart, Head of Lighthouse Curriculum has created a helpful flyer for students. Click here. Importance of SleepSleep is extremely important for the girls at this time. If they are trying to cram for an exam the night before and are running short of sleep, they are not giving themselves the best chance of success. A good sleep before each exam is much more beneficial than a late night of cramming. Year 10 ExamsFor our Year 10 girls who are experiencing their first set of exams, I wish them all the best. Once again, revision is excellent, and hopefully this has been a cumulative revision, rather than trying to cram a whole term of study into one night of revision. - Jennifer Crisp, Head of Senior School Girls in STEM Club: FrankenbotsBe inspired by real women working in Engineering at BHP, earn Girls in STEM Club badges while you create your own robotic monster using STEAM, micro:bits and other robots.
