Open Data: Why does it matter?

Welcome to the first edition of the ODX newsletter!

Canada’s Open Data Exchange helps companies find, understand and make the best possible use of open data – no matter where it comes from.

We want to keep you informed on the open data landscape with a focus on its use for commercial benefit. In an effort to make you a more productive user of open data, the newsletter will focus on trends, opportunities, best practices and resources

Why does this matter?

Open data as a resource is growing exponentially and available on a global scale. Data is at the heart of digital disruption.  More and more companies are developing and deploying business models around the use of data – their own or from other sources, like open government data. And, open data represents enormous opportunity ($3 trillion according to McKinsey & Company).

Unlike our traditional natural resources like oil, lumber and iron ore, open data can be created anywhere. As Canadians, we've developed expertise in converting natural resources into value.  Let’s leverage this knowledge to stake out a leadership position in the development of new products and services fueled by open data – the new oil.

ODX is here to help. Learn about our programs and services, check out upcoming events, or contact us for any of your open data needs.

Thank you,
