Dear neighbor,

These are strange times, indeed. Here in Portland, there seems to be a new kind of optimism about the COVID-19 pandemic. The sun is (sometimes!) shining, and some parks and businesses across the state have reopened with Governor Brown’s Phase One Plan. So, you might be thinking things are beginning to go back to “normal”, right?

For a few, maybe. Although we’ve worked hard to “flatten the curve” and the number of new COVID-19 cases has stabilized, the economic impact is far from over.

More than 400,000 Oregonians have applied for unemployment insurance since the pandemic began. The number of Oregonians who file for SNAP benefits in a month is up from 1,400 to 13,000 as of last week. The truth is, the need for essential services is going to get worse before it gets better.

Lift UP is an Oregon Food Bank (OFB) partner agency and their support has never meant more. Because of financial grants from OFB, Lift UP has been able to invest in providing fresh and nutritious food for its clients. This is especially important to our clients with specific dietary needs. More than 30% of our Delivered Food Box recipients identify as having dietary restrictions.

“For the first time in memory, I can afford to purchase canned tuna for our low sodium clients,” said Lift UP warehouse specialist, Ceci. “This is important because there are so few low sodium, shelf-stable, proteins available to them.”

So, while we may see some sun and optimism, consider the increasing number of individuals and families who still struggle with access to healthy food. By committing to a monthly donation, you’ll be able to continue food access to the community. Every $5 donation equals 15 meals for neighbors in need!

Sincerely,

The Lift UP Staff
