No Images? Click here Dear friend of PLC Whilst every term is action-packed for the Creative and Performing Arts at PLC, during Term 3 it moves into top gear. Over the last week alone we have held the Junior School Arts Day, participated in the IGSSA Dance Festival, listened to the Year 12 ATAR Recital Night, Year 11 Performance Afternoon and the Spring Concert and watched preparation for the Senior Music Showcase on Saturday 2 September, from 5.30 pm. As this is a free, non-ticketed event we warmly invite you to attend and enjoy a fabulous evening of music and the arts with our senior musicians. "Culture and the arts are essential components of a comprehensive education leading to the full development of the individual." - UNESCO. There is much literature which not only supports students participating in the arts but presents persuasive evidence that it has an impact on achievement in other curriculum areas and on student wellbeing. In their book, Transforming Education Through the Arts, Caldwell and Vaughan provide a powerful summary of the evidence available about the positive impact of participating in the arts. These include:
This evidence reinforces the important role that the arts play in student development and recognises the far-reaching benefits. Finally, I would like to wish all the fathers in the PLC community a very happy Fathers’ Day on Sunday and hope that you are provided the opportunity to spend this special day with your daughters and our PLC boys. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Deputy Principal Personal update from the PrincipalMy health has not been the best this term and, as such, I am having a hysterectomy on Tuesday 5 September and will be on leave for the balance of Term 3. I had hoped this could wait until the Christmas holidays, but unfortunately this is not the case. Dr Andrew Cousins will be acting Principal during my absence. I will be on campus from time to time to attend events as my health allows. If you missed the email you can read the newsletter here. Embrace documentary screeningBody image is among the top three personal concerns for young people and we are constantly considering how we can empower girls to be more body positive. As such, we are hosting a screening of the documentary, Embrace, for parents and daughters. Embrace shares the journey of Taryn as she travels the globe conducting interviews to better understand the alarming rates of body image issues that are seen in people of all body types. Hopefully, by watching the film together, many rich conversations are sparked between parents and daughters. The report needs to be considered as a snapshot, at one point in time, of your daughter’s achievement. The School uses the results to review our teaching and learning programme and also to identify any additional support that your daughter might need, but this is looked at in conjunction with other results, such as school reports and teacher recommendations. We are very pleased with the overall results of the School. If you wish to discuss your daughter’s results, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. OLNA Round 2This year’s Round 2 for OLNA will be held next week between Monday 4 and Wednesday 6 September. By now, you would have had information sent to you and your daughter informing you of the details through an email from Hayley Randall and reminders from each Year’s Learning Co-ordinator. It is important to note that the girls have been offered lots of support sessions by their teachers – particularly by Mr Ivulich in Maths. Year 10 ExamsExams for Year 10s will take place on Friday 8 September, Monday 11 September and Tuesday 12 September. By now the Year 10s will be well-versed on what to prepare and how to go about their study schedule. Girls have been given subject specific advice by their teachers, as well as study skills sessions. These sessions have focused on motivation, practical ways to revise, setting reasonable expectations and goals for study and homework sessions, and time management. To allow the girls to focus entirely on their exams, the timetable has been collapsed on Friday 8 September and Monday 11 September. This will allow the girls to revise for exams or complete any outstanding assessment work. During this time, the girls are expected to stay on campus. They are not permitted to leave campus until the end of the school day. Normal classes will resume for the majority of the girls on the Tuesday – except those who are sitting their music exam, which will take place during first period. - Neesha Flint, Director of Learning Writing for Life CompetitionSenior School students are invited to enter the 2017 Writing for Life Competition. Last year PLC had a number of students who entered this competition and won prizes. In fact, we blitzed the competition, winning every age group! The Writing for Life: Micro Fiction Young Writers Competition asks students to think critically and to write creatively. What if their words had the power to save lives? The students' writing challenge is to inhabit the mind of someone touched by organ donation; to make every word count (300 words or less) and create an emotional impact. This is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young West Australians, who currently wait too long for life-saving organ transplants. Entries close Friday 22 September. Visit the website to find out more. Physical Education UpdateHockeySchools from across Perth who finished in the top two of their respective senior hockey competition (IGSSA for PLC) were invited to participate in the Buchanan Cup. The Year 11/12 hockey team had an amazing day, making it through to the final to compete against Como Secondary College.
