Nurturing Our IdentityDeveloping identity is such an important part of growing up. Identity is our beliefs, attitudes, emotions and dispositions about something, and it can have a big impact on our motivations. The way we relate to something is very much about self-identity ('people like me'), and our perception of others who are involved in something ('not people like me'). We can nurture our identity by cultivating interest, relevance and confidence.
This is the driver for the wonderful and diverse range of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities offered at PLC. While on study leave, I heard about the idea that each of us have multiple identities. This concept resonated with me, as rather than identity only being about social development, or bound by the confines of a subject area, it can be about the skills we develop and apply beyond the classroom. It has a lot to do with the view we each have about whether a group is 'like me' or 'not like me'. One emerging idea is that, over time, we each develop a fitness identity, a numeracy identity, a literature identity, a musical identity or a STEM2D (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Manufacturing and Design) identity. We are seeing this concept of identity being discussed extensively with respect to STEM2D, where young girls and women have historically struggled to identify with culture, ultimately impacting on their science aspirations. When we start to look at work by researchers, such as Jennifer DeWitt and Louise Archer, about post-schooling aspirations, what emerges is that: - Parental attitude is the strongest predictor of career aspirations.
- Being and doing helps to develop a sense that something is 'for me'.
- Interventions around careers need to start from a much earlier age.
What this really confirms, for me, is the important role all members of the School community can play, and do play, in the development of self-efficacy by: - being a role model,
- offering personal stories, and
- connecting the activities to young people's current and future needs.
It also reaffirms the approach, lead by Mrs Simone Fleay (Head of Careers and Pathways) and Mrs Rebecca Garbenis (Head of IB Diploma), to the subject selection process, which is currently underway for girls in Year 10, and the post-school pathways support, which wraps up staff, parent and community involvement. What it also does is set us all the challenge about how each of us can play our part in this journey with the girls from an earlier age. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Acting Principal

When Life Throws You Lemons"Since I was young, I have always known this: Life damages us, everyone. We can't escape that damage. But now, I'm also learning this: We can be mended. We mend each other."
- Veronica RothIt is impossible to go through life without experiencing challenges, sorrow and pain. Sometimes it might seem as if the world is out of control and we are mere passengers on a runaway train. Yes, we could have days, weeks and even months when we can't see light at the end of the tunnel. Life can be challenging! Does this mean we should despair and be hopeless? Should we accept the wrongs, lies and obstacles as the only melody to dance to? What about the victories, joys and achievements? What about love? As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. -
Proverbs We are social beings and need to engage with other people to live and love life to the fullest. We impact one another and shape those around us, and they shape us in return. Let's choose our friends carefully and wisely, and choose to shape them in a positive way. Let's mend each other's broken dreams, and live with hope, while learning to be resilient. - Rev Manie Strydom, Chaplain

The second half of Term 2 is an exciting time for the Junior School. Performances, incursions and excursions, together with a challenging, relevant and engaging School curriculum, make each day exciting and varied.
Over the mid-term break, ten of our Year 6 girls represented PLC at the World Scholar's Cup. The students performed admirably and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would like to thank Michelle Clayton for working so hard to prepare the teams for competition, and for supporting them at the event. Parent / Teacher Interviews and Three-Way Conferences At the end of this term, we invite parents of
students in Years 3 - 6 to join their daughter and their daughter's teacher for a three-way conference to review the Semester 1 Report. Parent / Teacher interviews for Pre-Kindy - Year 2 will also be held at this time. Parent / Teacher interviews and three-way conferences will be held from Monday 1 July - Wednesday 3 July. An email with booking details will be sent to parents early next week.

World Scholar's Cup - Perth Round 2019The World Scholar's Cup (WSC) was held at Sacred Heart College, Sorrento, over the mid-term break. PLC Junior School was represented by the following Year 6 students: Livya Siford, Emma Ryan, Tessa van de Veire, Elise Wright, Rachel Wilson, Alani Webber, Isla Mannolini, Shiloh Thomas, Katie Stevens and Annika Pereira. Year 8 student, Jacqueline Yu, also competed in one of our Junior teams. The girls competed in teams of three, and all achieved outstanding results against strong competition. WSC is a two-day global academic competition, which aims to attract a global community of scholars and future leaders, enabling participants to discover their strengths and skills, while being invigorated by the fun of learning. The goal of the competition is to inspire in young people a love of learning, confidence in new skills, and a sense of global citizenship. Students compete across four challenge areas over two days: Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar's Challenge and Scholar's Bowl. They are scored, and receive awards, both individually and as teams. The theme of this year's Scholar's Cup was 'A World on the Margins'. To prepare, the girls studied topics including Unsolved Mysteries, Science, History, Art and Music, Social Studies and Literature. Our girls were challenged and engaged, singing, dancing and laughing, all in the name of academically extending themselves. Many attributes of the IB Learner Profile were exhibited, with perhaps 'risk-taker' being the first and foremost. The girls showed an admirable level of commitment in the lead up to the event, attending training sessions every Thursday before school for several months. Their hard work paid off, and they are to be congratulated on their fantastic results and enthusiastic participation across all challenge areas, particularly in the debating rounds, individual and group writing tasks, and intelligence quizzes. Livya Siford (Year 6) and Emma Ryan (Year 6), together with
Jacqueline Yu (Year 8), earned an invitation to the Global Round of the WSC in Sydney, having finished in 6th place overall. Our Junior girls represented the College with pride and humility, and contributed to what was an overwhelmingly celebratory atmosphere. A special thank you must go to the parents who dedicated so much time and energy to this event. - Ms Michelle Clayton, Gifted and Talented, Junior School
