Holiday Rescues Win Surf Lifesavers Rescue of the Month AwardA group of off-duty surf lifesavers have won the SLSNSW October Rescue of the Month Award after performing back-to-back rescues at the remote Seven Mile Beach. Surf Sports Legend John Holt OAM Inducted Into NSW Hall of ChampionsOn Monday November 18, John Holt from Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions at the NSW Champions of Sport Ceremony. Surf Lifesavers Stuff Surf Boats to Help FarmersSLSNSW has been challenged by Emergency Services Minister David Elliott and NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller through the 'Stuff Your Chopper' drive to get on board and donate food to help farmers doing it tough this Christmas. We will be joining forces with other NSW emergency service organisations to collect non-perishable food items for Foodbank's Christmas Hamper distribution. Branches and clubs can take their non-perishable food donations to participating Rural Fire Service office locations across NSW. A list of coastal locations can be found on the SLSNSW website. We encourage you to spread the word and get on board urgently to drop off donated goods. A Sea of Red and Yellow Floods NSW Parliament HouseVisitors to NSW Parliament House on this month could have been forgiven for thinking they’d stepped onto a beach, as a large group of the state’s top volunteer surf lifesavers gathered to celebrate the first ever Surf Life Saving Day. NSW Lifesavers Honoured at Australian AwardsNSW lifesavers have once again dominated the Surf Life Saving Australia Awards of Excellence across four categories including the prestigious DHL Surf Lifesaver of the Year. The Rubber Duckie Turns 50Surf lifesavers celebrated a milestone anniversary of the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) on 2 November 2019, 50 years to the day that the first prototype was trialled at Avalon Beach in Sydney in front of a sceptical crowd of onlookers. Coastal Drowning Tragedies up by 22%NSW has recorded a 22% spike in coastal drowning deaths over the 2018-19 year with 44 people tragically drowning along the NSW coast. SLSNSW has documented this worrying increase in the 2019 SLSNSW Coastal Safety Report, which details coastal drowning figures and identifies areas of concern for the coming summer. Surf Life Saving NSW Announces New Life MembersAt the recent Surf Life Saving NSW Annual General Meeting, five long-serving volunteer surf lifesavers were elevated to the distinguished position of NSW Life Member. Collaroy's Australian Champion Achieves Epic World RecordIt’s a classic case of name coincidence; Collaroy SLSC’s Georgie Rowe has ‘rowed’ her way into history after breaking the world five-kilometre indoor rowing record this month. 2019 Beach to Bush ProgramThis month SLSNSW held our 26th annual Beach to Bush program. Our dedicated volunteer presenters covered close to 8,000km to ensure vital water and sun safety messages are reaching our rural communities. Since 1994 over 250,000 students have taken part in the program.
