Welcome Back, Back Again, Guess Who's Back? CVM

Welcome back to all and a special welcome to our new UF CVM Class of 2021!  This is the Careers in CVM newsletter, dedicated to inform internal stakeholders in UF CVM about trends in the veterinary career fields, opportunities for events and workshops, and resources available to our UF CVM students, faculty, and staff.

Employer's Corner

This month's employer's corner is focused on prepping for our annual UF CVM Career Day.  This year Career Day is Thursday 9/14 lasting from 9:30am-6pm.  Below are 5 tips on preparing to make the most of this annual signature event in the college.

1.  Research who is coming - You can find an updated list of employers attending the Career Fair/Networking Session (2:30pm-6pm in Banfield A) on the Career Day website.  Check it periodically and research organizations that may be of interest to you.

2.  Do the prep work - Attend prep events and info sessions leading up to Career Day.  NVA is hosting an information and prep session on Wednesday 9/13 at 5pm in the New Auditorium with food, Register.

3. RSVP! - Don't be the one who shows up without having registered or even worse, the person who registers and doesn't show up.  Let employers and others know you're attending by RSVP'ing.

4. Bring your 'A' resume/CV - Ensure your resume is top notch and ready to go!  You can schedule an appointment with the UF CVM Career Counselor through Gator CareerLink.

5. Follow up - Don't leave Career Day without a plan for follow up.  Some employers attending Career Day are also inviting students to interview with them here in the college the day after Career Day (Friday 9/15).  Ask for the contact information of the person you connected with and send a thank you note or follow up email shortly after Career Day to inquire about next steps in the hiring process.

Student Tip - What is Career Day?

Did you know UF CVM and VBMA host Career Day annually here at the college?   Career Day is not common knowledge so here are a couple FAQs regarding Career Day.

 -  When is Career Day?
The exact date of Career Day changes every year but it has historically been hosted early to mid fall semester, this year it is on 9/14/17.

 - What goes on during Career Day?
Career Day has various career development opportunities for all UF CVM students (of all years, fields, and stages).  It includes one-on-one mock interviews and resume reviews with employers, a lunch and learn panel on benefits and career, and a Career Fair and Networking session from 2:30pm-6pm.  Fourth year students are given first opportunity to register for the mock interviews, resume reviews, and lunch.  The Career Fair is open to students of all years.  You can view the student schedule for the day here.
Career Day offers the rare opportunity to connect and get feedback from real veterinary professionals.  You can ask someone in the profession questions you have been struggling with such as - Do you care if my resume goes over one page?  Should I mention other 'non-vet' experience in my interview? and What do you really look for when you hire?

- Why would I benefit from attending?
Career Day is a great opportunity to network in the veterinary field.  Whether you are a fourth year student interested in an internship or a full time position or you are a second year thinking about externships or even a first year making plans for the summer, all the employers are here to connect with you!  Many of the attending employers are very open to hosting externs, interns, or even part time/summer staff! If you are not currently looking for a position, Career Day can be a great opportunity for getting feedback on your resume and interview while practicing your networking and small talk skills.

- But I have more questions!  Who can I talk to?
You can email KatelynJ@crc.ufl.edu, call 352-294-8504, or swing by VAB V1-100G (if the door is open).
