Links eNewsletter - Term 2 Week 10 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the Deputy
As Director of Wellbeing, Head of Rowing, a Senior Leadership Team member, coach and strategist, this staff member packs an enormous amount into her day. With the highly anticipated Head of the River coming up this Saturday 26 June, I feel it is high time we pulled back the curtain on this amazing staff member. Chonny James started at PLC as a new graduate teacher in 2000 and quickly distinguished herself as a leader within the School, becoming Head of Physical Education in 2006 and holding the role for 12 years until 2018. She is an impressively accomplished softball player and currently coaches the Australian Under 18s National Team. Chonny was appointed Director of Wellbeing in 2018 and, for Chonny, this was a unique opportunity to do something different that was not offered at other schools. Her vision for the Lighthouse was fundamentally to develop personalised wellbeing for each student rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. While the beautiful new Lighthouse building itself was finished, Chonny faced the meteoric task of building a culture, a team, and a programme from the ground up. The truly great value of the Lighthouse is often in what is unseen, intangible, and not advertised. It speaks to Chonny’s own integrity and values that she considers the team who work with her to be the greatest achievement of her leadership. Chonny’s personality and her qualities as a leader have instilled values of willing reciprocation, hard work, respect and community within the Lighthouse team. The Lighthouse also currently employs seven Year 11 and Year 12 boarding students as Lighthouse Assistants who devote their time and the energy after school to the Junior co-curricular programmes. There are also two Year 11 students doing workplace placements to support their VET pathway. As Head of Rowing, Chonny has again built a shared culture of commitment, hard work and belonging that, in no small way, underpins the great success of our rowing teams. Our PLC rowers train and perform at an elite level and rowing is renowned at PLC for its exceptional team culture and family spirit. Chonny’s philosophy is that you cannot be complacent about success or about building a culture – it all has to be intentional and much of that work in rowing takes place before most of us have even woken up. Rowing is also an integral part of PLC’s legacy of old collegians returning to give back to the School. Many of the rowing coaches are Old Collegians and their desire to come back to the School speaks to that invisible quality PLC has as a place people continue to feel connected to long after they have left. It would be wonderful for everyone to join the rowing community this Saturday for the Head of the River at Champion Lakes to support Chonny and the rowing team. - Chris Robinson – Deputy Principal Farewell Mrs SeeberOn Wednesday, we farewelled Mrs Sue Seeber from the Junior School. Mrs Seeber has added so much to our community and assisted so many students and families over her career. As evidence of the esteem with which she is held, the girls choreographed and danced to ‘On Top of the World’ as a farewell. We will miss Mrs Seeber and wish her all the best as she moves into retirement and all the best for her upcoming exploration of the Kimberly. Cyber-Safety Parent WorkshopProtecting children in their digital worlds is an ever-evolving task for families. Now more than ever, parents are looking for guidance in how to manage screen time and navigate the world of games and social media. We are pleased to help our Junior School parent community by offering a crucial and engaging education session with ySafe, a leading provider of cyber safety education. This practical, strategy-rich session will cover the most important points that all families need to know about online safety, covering key information about social media and gaming, screen time recommendations and step-by-step instructions on how to set up a cyber-safe home for kids of all ages. The workshop will be held on Tuesday 3 August from 6.30 pm – 7.30 pm in the PLC Auditorium and we encourage our Junior School parent community to attend. Parents will be receiving an email containing further information and a link to register for the workshop. Parent/Teacher Interviews & Three-Way (Student/Teacher/Parent) ConferencesAt the end of this term, we invite parents of students from Years 3 to 6 to join with their daughter and their teacher on receipt of the Semester 1 Report, to a Three-Way Conference. What Happened This Week in the Boarding HouseCreativity, fitness, and environmental consciousness. The Year 11 focus. This week, we will be highlighting the amazing programme run by the Year 11 Co-ordinator Miss Grace Le Fanu and Assistant Miss Cassidy Baxter. With a focus on creativity, the Year 11s are exploring various artistic techniques. This term they brought some colour to the Year 11 corridor with pictures inspired by Japanese 'Jog-e' drawings. All the girls partnered up to create cartoon faces that changed expression when flipped upside down. They also had fun creating blind contour portraits of each other (drawing without looking at the paper or lifting the pen off) and got some hilarious and eye-catching results. These were then passed around and decorated with words of affirmation for all the qualities they felt each individual brings to the group. Earlier in the year, the Year 11s were introduced to fimo clay, creating a variety of decorative magnets to hold posters and pictures to the convo fridge. Some of the green-thumbs in the year group have even had a one-on-one macramé lesson with Miss Le Fanu to create a hanging potholder for their indoor plants. To further encourage and support environmental awareness, they are each gifted with a beautiful and environmentally friendly glass straw and pipe-cleaner from 'Sea-straws' for their birthday. The cohesiveness and supportiveness of the cohort is reinforced with a birthday cake baking roster. Each Year 11 student gets the chance to blow everyone away with her cake-baking skills and present her lovingly made cake at supper for the birthday girl to share. - Katherine Hazlewood – Boarding House Deputy (Wellbeing and Pastoral Care) Co-curricular Sign-UpThe Term 3 Co-curricular programme information and sign-ups for Junior School and Senior School will go live on Friday 25 June at 5.00 pm.
