Mountain Pygmy Possum campaignZoos Victoria recently launched an awareness campaign about the challenges facing our Mountain Pygmy Possum (MPP), specifically the lack of its key food source, the Bogong Moth. Alongside a media blitz and campaign to have lights turned off at high profile public buildings across south-eastern Australia, members of the public are being encourage to register their Bogong Moth sightings. Moth Tracker, a citizen science tool being co-developed by Zoos Victoria and the Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation at FedUni allows anyone, anywhere to geo-locate, photograph and log their moth sighting on any internet enabled device. All moth images will be verified by trained staff/volunteers. The information gathered will provide open source data to the scientific community about Bogong moth numbers, locations and migration timing, assisting with bridging knowledge gaps and alerting the MPP Recovery Team to early warning of possible failed migration in 2019. Target audiences for the Moth Tracker citizen science platform include youth and community groups across the known geographic range of the Bogong moth migration. The Moth Tracker Citizen Science Website is now live. It can be found here: https://www.swifft.net.au/mothtracker/ or link from the possums page (click button below). Excitingly, the first Bogong Moth sighting was recently confirmed in Ararat. You can see how the moth sighting are tracking in the live map on the website. TNE season wrap-up at Hotham As always, the winter season saw snow operators double pedalling to meet the masses - making hay while the sun shines (or snow falls!), so to speak. So before you lose too much momentum, take an opportunity to sit back, have a coffee and take stock of the season gone by and the green season to come. Join TNE in an open discussion and catch up with your fellow operators on the 2019 snow season strengths, weaknesses, improvements, surprises and opportunities (snow will be taken care of first so people may leave if they aren’t involved in the green season). From here, we’ll primarily discuss opportunities for the coming green season including walking, riding and cultural experiences as well as preparation and technology. Date And Time

Parks Victoria seeking community feedback Parks Victoria is inviting the community to help shape the long-term future of Victoria’s natural landscapes, by providing feedback into the first stage of its Land Management Strategy. The Strategy will set out the long‑term direction and priorities for the protection, management and use of Parks Victoria managed land. It will outline how the management and resourcing of Victoria’s parks will change and adapt over time and will be used to guide planning and decision-making. People can provide feedback online until Sunday 29 September, 2019 at the link below. Reminder: Facebook events - add us as a co-host! We want to cater to the sector of our increasingly mobile audience who rely on social media for notification about what's happening at Hotham. We've used the Facebook Events function more this season to raise awareness of on-mountain events, with the added benefit that users are provided with reminders about these events and don't have to search for information about them. If you add a Hotham event to your Facebook profile, please consider adding @mthotham.rmb as a co-host, so the event appears automatically to people following our profile. This is better than us adding the event separately, because it means that if you post updates in your event or change any details, our audience will see them too. |
