Dear member,

Have you wondered whether the Health Innovation Hub is the place to be for you and your company? With access to University of Alberta resources, not to mention office AND laboratory space, the Health Innovation Hub provides our entrepreneur community much needed support. You don’t have to take our word for it. Matt Hodgson, this week’s Meet our Community guest says “our company didn't originate within the U of A and as a result, we didn't have direct access to many of the resources afforded by the Health Innovation Hub.” Like Matt, the Health Innovation Hub has given many early-stage companies a leg-up and has propelled them into their growth and scale-up journey.

We are committed to supporting our community members throughout their commercialization journey and are always looking to build value-add partnerships that expand our support and resources. I am delighted to inform you that we have partnered with Goodlawyer, a Calgary-based legal startup to provide access to legal services to our health innovation community. All Health Innovation Hub members get a whopping 25% discount on Goodlawyer annual subscription that provides unlimited advice sessions, lots of extra savings, and a legal army for all your legal needs. Email us to get your code TODAY.

Check out the Funding and Wage Subsidies section for information on the different subsidy programs available to hire students or recent graduates from Alberta’s post-secondary institutions. Your next hire could be just a click away.

We have been receiving some great feedback from our community. This is extremely valuable to us to make the digest better. Thank you for your continuous support and solidarity and please forward the digest to your network to expand health innovation across Alberta.

Meet our Community

Matt Hodgson

Co-Founder at Outbreaker Solutions

1. What does health innovation/ innovation in health mean to you?

Working to solve complex problems through the use of novel technologies to improve patient outcomes and overall public health.

2. In your opinion, what is the state of the health innovation ecosystem in Alberta, Canada and globally?

It's exciting building a biotech start-up in Alberta right now. There's some much-deserved attention on many companies and entrepreneurs excelling within their field. I hope this attention helps highlight the differences between the health innovation ecosystem and the more "traditional" tech ecosystem in Edmonton as health innovation requires different infrastructure, more capital and longer timelines. Looking at Canada and globally, the volume of new technology hitting the healthcare market in the coming years makes me very optimistic.

3. What motivated you to join the Health Innovation Hub?

One of the most important factors for Outbreaker Solutions joining the Health Innovation Hub was access to office, but more importantly, laboratory space. Although we collaborate with U of A researchers, our company didn't originate within the U of A and as a result, we didn't have direct access to many of the resources afforded by the Health Innovation Hub.

4. How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

A biotech entrepreneur working to bridge the gap between science and business.

5. What is the one thing that you are most excited about right now?

As an Edmontonian in late February, I can confidently say I'm looking forward to a hot summer day.
