Dear Friends, November has gotten off to a great start at The FriendShip, with lots of services for our members and a delightful lunch outing too! Here's a friendly reminder about some programs coming up in the next few weeks. Read below for details about these activities, as well as for a few other important updates and reminders. Thurs., Nov. 15 - Caring for the Skin You're In One of our wonderful Board members, Dr. Donna Ray, will present a program on Thursday, November 15 entitled "Caring for the Skin You're In." (This program was originally scheduled to take place in September but was postponed due to inclement weather.) Please join us to learn about what we can do to maintain/improve our skin and avoid issues. There will be plenty of time for questions as well. The schedule will be as follows:
This program will take place in the Parlor at St. John's Episcopal Church. If you haven't already done so, please let us know if you are planning to attend by Tuesday, November 13 at noon by calling the office at 803-602-6434 or emailing contact@thefriendship.org. Guests are welcome, and The FriendShip is happy to arrange rides for members who need them. Tues., Nov. 27 - Afternoon Social Hour with a special activity to help the children of Family Promise FriendShip members and volunteers had a fun time at last month's social hour making Halloween treats and even roasting marshmallows! The November social hour will have a holiday focus as well. We'll be filling Christmas stockings for children who are a part of Family Promise of the Midlands, which is an organization that "helps families who are experiencing homelessness to achieve sustainable independence." Please come learn more about the good work Family Promise does, contribute to this meaningful activity, and enjoy being with FriendShip friends! The social hour is scheduled for Tuesday, November 27 at 2:00-3:00 p.m. A FriendShip member/volunteer will host us at her home in Rosewood. Details on location and supplies needed for our activity will be given when you RSVP. Please let us know if you can come by Tuesday, November 20 at noon by calling the office at 803-602-6434 or emailing contact@thefriendship.org. As always, just let us know if you need a ride! Other Updates/Reminders The FriendShip office will be closed on Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23 for Thanksgiving. Happy Turkey Day to all our members, volunteers, and supporters! The FriendShip is thankful for each and every one of you! Raffle tickets are still available! The FriendShip is holding a raffle for a Big Green Egg grill and a pair of Carolina Panthers tickets (for the game on December 17). Raffle tickets are $20, and the drawing will be held on Monday, November 19. Call The FriendShip office at 803-602-6434 for more details or to purchase tickets. You can also contact the office if you'd like tickets to sell on behalf of The FriendShip. Special thanks to Jack Oliver's Pool, Spa & Patio for helping us with the Big Green Egg grill! Make sure you've marked your calendar for the December Dutch treat lunch which is set for Tuesday, December 4 at 11:30 a.m. More details to come! The Columbia Age Friendly Advisory Council and AARP are seeking input from citizens who live in Columbia to understand how to make our community a better place to live and age in. The council is conducting a survey that covers various community issues such as health services, transportation and more. Please take some time now to complete the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Q63JYGJ. Your answers will be kept confidential. If you have any questions or concerns, please email scaarp@aarp.org. To learn more about AARP’s work on Livable Communities, please visit https://www.aarp.org/livable-communities/. The FriendShip has recently been approached by a USC student (who is also a retired Dell engineer and lives not far from our office) to see if any members or volunteers would be willing to participate in a short survey of older adults who wish to age in place. His engineering project team is looking at how technology can help seniors stay in their homes as long as possible. The team has a 15-question phone survey that seeks to gather non-personal information about issues facing seniors and/or families and caregivers. You can contact Mike Leonard directly at 803-799-8267 or leonarms@email.sc.edu to arrange a time for a 15-minute phone interview. (Feel free to contact Eleanor at The FriendShip first if you think more information would be helpful or want help in following up on this.) Thanks for considering this request to help out USC students and contribute to their understanding of aging in place! Hope to see you soon! - The FriendShip |
