Iran-Backed Hackers Aim for Economic Disruption

Hello. With four to five more weeks of heavy military action in Iran expected by President Trump, Iran and its proxy groups have plenty of time to wage cyberattacks. 

Escalating corporate risk related to the conflict will no doubt be a big topic at the Dow Jones Risk Journal Summit in New York on Wednesday. I hope to see you there. 

Meanwhile, Canada and the U.K. issued alerts to businesses and infrastructure providers to watch for signs of cyber strikes, including attempts to manipulate industrial systems and social engineering efforts.

As Frank Cilluffo, director of Auburn University’s McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security, told us: Iran-backed actors have historically concentrated on sectors such as energy, oil and gas, and water. But amid geopolitical tension, they often expand the target set.

A former employee of Microsoft's Nuance unit pleaded guilty to downloading 1.2 million records containing personal and medical data of patients of the Geisinger health system in 2023. He faces up to five years in prison. Nuance supplies voice-activated ambient AI tools to doctors' offices. (Becker's Hospital Review)

Singapore's government is making available a proprietary threat-detection system to infrastructure operators in an attempt to beef up their cyber defenses. The government will also consider funding the cost of integrating the system with existing security tools. (Channel News Asia)
