Links eNewsletter - Term 2 Week 8 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the PrincipalIt is with great pleasure that I wish to announce the appointment of our new Chaplain to PLC, Rev Nalin Perera, who has accepted this Uniting Church Synod Placement, following the unanimous recommendation of the College Council. Rev Perera’s appointment follows in the steps of the distinguished contributions of his two predecessors, Rev Manie Strydom and Rev Gary van Heerdon, who both served our school community well. Prior to this appointment, Rev Perera, or “Rev” as he is universally known, devoted nine years of distinguished service as Chaplain to Wesley College, during which time, as then Head of Junior School, I had the great privilege of working closely with him for four years. - Cate Begbie – Principal West Australian of the Year Youth AwardAt a gala dinner on Friday 4 June at Crown Towers, attended by the Governor and Premier of WA, the announcement was made of the 2021 Western Australian of the Year Awards. Our own Old Collegian Kendall Whyte (2010) received the West Australian Youth Award. Miss Whyte is CEO and co-founder of the Blue Tree Project which she started in memory of her brother and received this award for challenging the stigma around mental health. There are now over 700 blue trees across Australia (including one in our Lighthouse), with many new ones popping up internationally. These act as visual reminders of the importance of mental health and supporting loved ones. PLC Dance ShowcaseThe long weekend has also provided a very well-deserved break for all of us, especially those staff, students, and choreographers for whom the next two weeks will be packed with Performing Arts rehearsals. PLC’s fabulous Dance Showcase Raison D’etre (Reason for Being) premieres on Thursday 17 June. The Dance Showcase channels the passion, hard work, and artistic talents of all of those involved and is the School’s annual celebration of dance and the deep love of dance that so many in our community share. Raison D’etre features 75 PLC dance students from Years 10 to 12 as well as students from our co-curricular programmes: Dance Company and Dance Collective. It encompasses a range of genres from contemporary, ballet, musical theatre and hip hop!
Given that last year’s Dance Showcase was canceled due to COVID-19, I would encourage everyone to take full advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a large-scale performance and appreciate the joy of live performing arts. - Chris Robinson – Deputy Principal Instrumental and Vocal Lessons - Term 3Congratulations to all students for another term of hard work and dedication to their music studies. Please note that any cancellations of instrumental or vocal lessons for Term 3 should be received by the Music Department via music@plc.wa.edu.au by Monday 21 June, otherwise students will automatically be timetabled for Term 3 lessons and tuition fees applied. Junior School Winter ConcertLast night we were fortunate enough to enjoy the musical delights of the Junior School Winter Concert. It was fabulous to see the musical talents of our students with the majority of our girls performing in one of the eight groups. Congratulations to all the staff and students for a wonderful evening. AISWA Early Learning GrantIn 2020, the Junior School applied for, and were awarded, a grant from the Association of Independent School of Western Australia (AISWA) to support the implementation of our Early Years, Quality Improvement Plan. This plan is directly aimed at Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 students. The grant was for the purchase of equipment that supported the children’s imaginative play, motor skill development, and fun! The school purchased a mud kitchen, a wide range of balance obstacles, loose parts play, and sporting equipment. As you can imagine the students have appreciated the injection of these new items into their environments. The new equipment has provided enhanced play opportunities and this play is critical in childhood development. Not only does play require the development of communication, negotiation, risk-taking and problem-solving skills, but it also supports the development of the core academic skills in literacy and numeracy. My thanks to AISWA for awarding us this grant. - Richard Wright – Head of Junior School JIGSSA Winter Games - Year 4

There is still a petting zoo and a boarders basketball match to look forward to. Identity, Goal Setting and Aspirations - The Year 10 FocusThis week, we will be focusing on the unique approach from our Year 10 Co-ordinators, Darcie McAuliffe and Sarah Taylor. The Year 10's theme for 2021 is ‘identity’ with a focus on goals and aspirations for Semester 1. The girls have set short- to long-term goals and Sarah and Darcie have ongoing discussions with them about how best to achieve these goals. This focus is especially important with the girls beginning to consider their subject selections for Years 11 and 12. As part of their short-term goal setting, the girls set a weekly ‘Team Goal’ which usually has an emphasis on setting positive routines for study and making the Boarding House a positive and safe space for everyone.
