December 3, 2020 Issue No. 14 Thank you for reading the Faculty Focus. We encourage you to share this issue with your clinical partners. Verification of Eligibility for CSMLS Certification Exams To be eligible to write the CSMLS National Certification Examination (Exam), candidates must have successfully completed all program requirements a minimum of two (2) weeks before the Exam date or within the past twelve (12) months of graduation, never having previously registered for the same Exam. This includes the completion of the clinical placement portion of the program. The eligibility of ALL exam candidates is verified prior to all Exams. Exam candidates from EQual accredited Canadian medical laboratory training programs are conditionally accepted into an Exam session until their eligibility has been verified by their program through the Verification of Eligibility form, which must be done a minimum of two (2) weeks prior to the Exam date. The CSMLS and Exam candidates rely on training programs to promptly and carefully complete the Verification of Eligibility form. This form verifies individual Exam candidates who are progressing towards the successful completion of their program. It also identifies Exam candidates who are not eligible to challenge the Exam. Exam candidates who do not meet our eligibility requirements will have their Exam registration cancelled. If we are notified of this less than fourteen (14) days before the Exam date, the candidate may lose their full Exam fee, as our Exam policy states (see Exam Handbook). This is why it is so important for programs to complete the forms as soon as they are received from the CSMLS Exam Administrator. Educator Committee The Educator Committee met on November 2 to discuss issues that are important to the educator community. A meeting summary will be posted in the Educators Hub section of our website once it is available. Educator Committee Volunteer PositionA position on the Educator Committee has opened up. The Educator Committee is a forum for Canadian educators to collaborate on areas of common interest as well as being a conduit for effective two-way communication between CSMLS and the educator community. The commitment will be for two meetings annually, with additional collaboration as required. It is expected that meetings will be held virtually with the potential for one live meeting per year. Live meeting expenses will be covered by the CSMLS. This will be a 3-year term, renewable for 1 additional term. If you would like to apply for the position, please send your CV and letter of interest via email to certification@csmls.org or fax (905-528-4968) by December 15, 2020. Fee increases, as shown below, are also posted on our website. Supporting Exam Candidates Through RPT Remote proctor testing (RPT) will continue to be offered for Certification Exams in 2021. All exam candidates opting to use RPT are encouraged to explore the Remote Proctoring for Computer-Based Examinations information on our website before they select this option. Also relatively new to the CSMLS website are the Certification FAQs. We encourage all exam candidates to review these before sitting the exam. Mental Health Tools to Support Students Mental health affects everyone, especially students during the current pandemic. That’s why ensuring students are mentally healthy is the priority of many educators. The Indigo Lab Coat Campaign This fall, we launched a national campaign that encouraged the public to take a closer look at all the work you do, literally, with the Indigo Lab Coat. The Indigo Lab Coat is covered with the names of the 1.2 million tests you perform each day, all printed in microscopic indigo text – a colour that represents confidence, intelligence, ambition and devotion. The campaign included outdoor advertising in major cities across Canada as well as social media ads driving traffic to a website, IndigoLabCoat.ca. The social media ads alone were seen more than 2 million times! Many influential Canadians posted messages of support, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam, Olympic champion Hayley Wickenheiser and so many others.
