Nuclear power plants around the world have made headlines in recent years because of controlled reactor shut downs precipitated by partial losses of power known as “open-phase faults.” An open-phase fault occurs if one or two of the three conductors fails open (conductor disconnects) exposing the in-plant safety systems to a potentially undesirable situation that may lead to failure.
As a result, the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) began to raise awareness of this potential nuclear plant design vulnerability.
In response, the ETAP Nuclear Utilities Users Group (NUUG) consulted with ETAP to provide a capability to simulate and analyze the effects of an open phase condition. After close collaboration and an interactive customer-vendor development effort, ETAP unveiled a comprehensive graphical Open-Phase Fault Analysis capability to study the condition and, in turn, saved utilities millions of dollars that would have been required by alternative approaches.

Oil and gas companies around the world trust ETAP to ensure power system resilience in their most demanding upstream, midstream, and downstream operations. At the recent IEEE PCIC (Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee) Conference in San Francisco, ETAP demonstrated its geospatial technologies for oil and gas production fields.
Oil and gas production fields are in a constant state of change and supplying power to the new wells and reservoirs is an ever-growing challenge. With assets distributed throughout a large geographical area add to the complexity of integrating and coordinating the electrical system between engineering, operation and planning.
ETAP’s model-driven distribution management system for oil and gas production facilities provides a single platform for modeling, design, analysis, operation and automation integrated with geospatial views to manage such dispersed assets.
