WELCOME Welcome all to another term of CSL! As Shingi, or Evaluation Coordinator, notes below, CSL is a proven pedagogical approach to deepen student learning and effectively support our community. A special welcome to the CSL community to our new instructors, including Kristi and Donna teaching Kinesiology 471& 472 and partnering with the Steadward Centre, and to Jay in Psychology 498 opening her course to a new community engaged research project. I also wanted to alert you to our CSL Instructor Workshop on when you may need course-based ethics for community engaged learning activities. It's on October 17th, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in Tory 3-65 and lunch is provided. I'll be joined by a staff member from the Research Office on campus to share examples. Feel free to invite your grad students as well. It would be great to see you there. All the best for this term, and please let the team know if and when you need assistance with anything at all. Cheers, David Peacock, CSL Executive Director DATES OCT 12: CSL Student Intern Application Due OCT 15: Winter 2019 CSL Intentions Due OCT 15: Small Grant Application Due NEWS CSL STUDENT INTERN I am excited to be welcomed to the CSL team. My name is Mpoe Mogale (they/them) and I am currently completing an undergraduate degree in Political Science. Outside the classroom walls, I serve as one of the Arts SU Councillors, and am heavily involved in Edmonton's arts community. I came to CSL through an instructor who highlighted the program as an opportunity to take part in Edmonton's broad non-profit sector. In talking about CSL to anyone that will listen, I always boast on how it sets itself apart from other programs as it allows students to see how the theory they learn in class is applied and practiced daily by community partners. I bring with me a passion in community building and an eagerness to learn how this incredible program functions. I am excited to get to know each of you that are involved in the making of this community, so please drop by throughout the term to say hello! - Mpoe CSL INSTRUCTOR WORKSHOP Do I need course-based ethics for my community engaged learning activities? HUMANITIES 101 September is here and that means a new semester of Humanities 101 is starting! This semester we are excited to announce the launch of a new Humanities 101 class. This class is a partnership with Capital Region Housing and will be taking place on Wednesday evenings at the Parkdale One Building in Parkdale. We are also continuing with our on-campus class happening every Tuesday evening. The theme for the Tuesday and Wednesday classes this semester will be Putting Theory to Work. We will explore classical and contemporary theories that have been used to explain our lived experiences and social worlds. Using critical thinking, pop culture, and our knowledges we will investigate and challenge these theories. This semester in Wings our theme will be Women and Labour. We will interrogate stereotypes and truths of women in work, asking questions about what counts as work, whose labour is valued, and why do men still get paid more than women? We are looking forward to all the learning that will happen this semester! EVALUATION NEWS Our evaluation sabbatical has ended! The meta-evaluation of our evaluation data from
You can confidently partner with CSL knowing it to be a proven method to deepen student learning and build community capacity! But it's a new term and we are planning for CSL evaluations once again! This term we are continuing with a full program of evaluations for all CSL

Survey findings from student evaluations are only shared with CSL staff and the instructors. We continue to Wish you all a successful academic year. - Shingi PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT Rainbow Alliance for Youth of Edmonton (RAYE) is made up of a group of representatives of service providers and agencies from across Edmonton. Representatives include The Pride Centre, Homeward Trust, Queerflex, Edmonton's Men's Health Collective, HIV Edmonton, the City of Edmonton and many more. Our committee's purpose is to share the diverse stories of LGBTQ2S+ youth living in the Edmonton area to promote increased understanding, empathy, and knowledge of this community's specific needs, strengths, and experiences. We focus on identifying barriers, strengths, and opportunities for LGBTQ2S+ service provision and access, provide recommendations on LGBTQ2S+ youth needs in Edmonton & Area, and engage youth voices and increase their ability to advocate for themselves. This semester we are working with ALES 204 class to create a number of communication tools for RAYE to effectively outreach to both LGBTQ2S+ youth in Edmonton as well as outreach to service providers who may be looking to better serve the needs of queer youth in Edmonton. - Kyla Have you read our 2017-2018 Annual Report yet?
