New wave pop artist, So Much Light (aka Damien Verrett), recently announced his debut album Oh, Yuck (August 11 via Anti- Records). In anticipation, So Much Light creates a dialogue hinged on the protagonist's hookup ambitions in new single “Full Body Mirror.” All the while, taking a critical look at his conditioned male perspective and the objectification that befalls women.
Verrett explains, “The track is about microaggressions people may not realize they are committing when they compliment or comment on a person’s appearance…The instrumentation and arrangement were inspired by my love for Disney music. It’s like ‘Hakuna Matata’ for 20-somethings.”
The track features woodwind arrangements by Nate Kinsella (American Football, Joan of Arc) in addition to Verrett’s sprightly guitar work and programming. A self-proclaimed Bizarre & B artist, Verrett puts traditional R&B tropes in a funhouse mirror and warps the genre’s bravado into a parody of itself.
Much of the self-produced Oh, Yuck was written and record in the suburban home of Verrett’s parents. His father, a longtime soul and R&B musician, inspired Verrett to pursue music as a passion, but not without a twist of self-deprecation and humor. “Soul has wisdom behind it,” says Verrett “but I'm recording this in my parents' house ... in the closet. I was like 'No, this is Idiot Soul.'”
