CONTENTS SPOTLIGHT - THE MAYOR'S INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PROGRAMME - WELCOME TECH STARTUPS SPOTLIGHT THE MAYOR'S INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PROGRAMME - Last Monday at WeWork the first conference for #LondonIsOpen was held. The event was organised in association with London & Partners, the official promotional agency for the Mayor of London and Paris & CO, the economic development and innovation agency of Paris. The event was sponsored by Eurostar and KPMG amongst others. The business mission led by the Mayor’s International Business Programme is part of the Mayor’s initiative to reinforce commercial links and investment between London and Paris. This project is based on establishing a worldwide network of key cities in order to help entrepreneurs to develop their businesses in different marketplaces. The initiative also constitutes an attempt to support entrepreneurs by providing: working spaces, networking opportunities and affordable living solutions. Following the announcement of this scheme between Paris and London, other major cities like Berlin, Amsterdam, San Diego and Lisbon have also taken part in the initiative. Despite the UK referendum decision to leave the European Union, London and Paris remain close business partners. Throughout the last ten years London-based businesses have generated £2.1billion of capital investment from France, creating more than 5,800 jobs in London (Fdi 2007-2017). Similarly, London is the leading contributor to investment in France. Since 2007 London has invested more than £5.75 billion in French businesses (Fdi 2007-2017). FOCUS ON A MEMBER GRANRUT'S NEW INITIATIVE-U.START Within five years, the number of French start-ups increased by 30% during the 9 first months of 2017 and fundraisings of innovative companies reached a record of 2.2 billion Euros. Does this trend make France the new “Start-up Nation”? If it’s still too soon to answer this question once and for all, it is important to note that the start-ups market and more generally, innovative companies, have become a major issue for an increasing number of law firms. This is the case in particular of Granrut law firm which recently launched “U.start” (www.ustartbygranrut.com) a service platform specifically designed for start-ups, innovative companies and their managers. The French law firm, comprised of fifty lawyers specialized in main business law areas, intends to support these start-ups in all stages of their growth, from their incorporation to their IPO. Through this integrated service platform, a whole range of legal services is made available to developing companies, brands, data protection, taxation, fundraising, human resources. The objective is to provide these companies with a complete, comprehensive and high added value legal follow-up, provided by lawyers with an extensive knowledge of the start-ups ecosystem and innovation-related issues. It is therefore a one-stop shop that is offered to innovative companies: · Access to a multi-specialized team: Corporate, IP/IT, Commercial, Tax, Employment; · A tailor-made accompaniment at every key stage of business development; · A methodology of services based on key principles: trust, responsiveness/flexibility, transversality, work in project-mode. FLYBE - PROFIT WARNING With the public concerned regarding air travel after Monarch, Flybe has taken the unusual step last week of warning that higher costs will mean lower than expected first half pre-tax profits. The share price dropped to 34.38p, valuing the carrier at £76.66m. The airline floated in 2010 at 295p. Flybe says that some higher costs relate to the airline’s drive to improve aircraft reliability, particularly with the Bombardier Q400. MEN'S FASHION THE STORY OF SUITS ON SAVILE ROW - BY WILFRED GROUP Savile Row is a name synonymous with masculine elegance, time-honoured tradition and discreet luxury. For almost 500 years this quiet street in Mayfair has played host to generations of talented artisans, lovingly dressing gentlemen and ladies in some of the finest bespoke clothes. Every Savile Row suit starts life as a two-dimensional length of superfine suiting cloth, transformed over time to fit the customer precisely. Every suit is unique, made to the customer’s exact measurements (typically around thirty measurements will be taken), drafted into an individual paper pattern from which the chosen or ‘bespoken’ cloth is cut. The suit will then be handmade, with the cloth shrunken, stretched, pressed, stitched and structured into a perfectly form-fitting three-dimensional garment. Apprentice tailors can train for up to six years to be considered a specialist in just one area of bespoke tailoring. WE WANT YOUR FEEDBACK INTERESTED IN FEATURING IN OUR NEWSLETTER?
