Welcome to 2018

Everyone at the APC would like to take this opportunity in our first newsletter of the year to wish a happy and fulfilling 2018 to all parents, children, teachers, principals, school staff, and our partners in education.

We’d also like to thank everyone for their support in 2017. We achieved a lot, including our successful #parentech campaign, which raised the issues of parenting in a digital age and really created a buzz, with our showings of the Screenagers movie, online content, digital detox and parenting advice. The #parentech survey is still open and we encourage you to have your say. It would be wonderful if you could share it with your networks at school, work and socially. The more feedback we get, the more feedback we can pass on.

APC’s timetable is looking busy for 2018. We've hit the ground running in Term 1, which has been dominated by three big events:

Details of all our submissions, activities and campaigns are on the APC website.

First parent, family and community engagement qualification launched

A new nationally recognised qualification offers specialist training and professional development for the first time in parent, family and community engagement.

The 10500NAT Certificate IV qualification has been developed by the Australian Parents Council and training specialist, Lee Hecht Harrison (RTO 21530), and is accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority.

The course develops practical expertise in parent engagement in schooling and learning, and skills in building positive relationships that encourage the best educational experience for children.  It is suitable for people working or volunteering in a school, preschool and early childhood centre, or community, not for profit or government organisation. It takes 12 months to complete and is offered fully online or as blended online and face-to-face delivery.

Enrolments are now open and the first course starts 16 April. So please get in touch to find out more, and share with anyone you think might be interested.

Parent, family and community engagement is well recognised as helping children achieve what they are capable of and the Australian Parents Council is proud to be involved in developing the first ever qualification of its kind in the country, and would like to thank all those who helped bring this project to life.

Submission to review of school funding

In March we made a submission to the federal government’s review of its proposed new school funding model.
This is obviously incredibly important because of the potential impact on school fees of the proposed changes.
We made it clear in our submission that parents make a significant long term financial commitment when they choose a non-government school for their children, and strongly argued that changes should not damage the diversity, affordability and accessibility of schooling currently available.
APC wants the best outcome for every student in Australia and is committed to ensuring that non-government schools are accessible and affordable.

You can read the full submission via our website.

If you have any comments on this please email us.

??? about NAPLAN online

Do you want to know more about NAPLAN online....
  • How it will work in practice?
  • What it will mean for children?
  • Why it's being introduced?
  • Are there any advantages of testing online?
  • Are students ready?
  • Will it be fair?
  • What it will actually test?
  • What results can really tell teachers, schools and parents?
  • How will children requiring special provisions be catered for?
We know a lot of parents are concerned about how it's going to affect children, and how it's all going to work. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) the national body responsible for NAPLAN, are keen to connect directly with parents and have asked us to pass on  questions and comments from parents to them. So if there's something you'd like to know or you have a question or several questions about NAPLAN Online, please email us. We will send them on to ACARA and share their answers.

ACARA has recently updated information for parents about the My School website, which is where NAPLAN results are reported.
