Throwback ThursdayOlympian, June Maston (1928-2004)Olympian, June Maston grew up at 8 Agnes Street, Strathfield. At the 1948 London Olympics she competed in the long jump as well as the 400 metre relay team with Shirley Strickland, winning silver. In 1949 she married fellow Olympian, water polo player Jack Ferguson at St. Anne’s Anglican Church, Strathfield. June was also a physical education teacher, coaching a number of talented athletes from the 1950s until her retirement in 1988. Among them was a young Betty Cuthbert, whom she coached throughout her career. In 1967 June received an MBE. She died of motor neurone disease in 2004.
