IGS alumnus helps head Antipodeans Cambodia trip

In April our IGS Antipodeans Teams returned from their community projects in Cambodia. The Ultimo students were lead by a team of IGS teachers, including IGS HSIE teacher and graduate of the Class of ‘04 Luke Naivasha.

We helped a very poor village near Siem Reap with digging a pond and putting pipes in. They were so thankful that they are planning on making an "International Grammar School" banner so that generations in the future will know that it was us who helped. We also helped build a house for an elderly disabled woman. The family and neighbours were very grateful. The builders were very inclusive, and we did a lot of hard work. At the end, some monks performed a ceremony and blessed the house.

We also spent time playing with, and teaching the local kids English. It was very funny and we loved seeing how eager they were to learn...By the end of our time there, it was hard to say goodbye because we had all become a very big family. – Team Prajna

IGS Class of '06

Kim Robitschko

What’s a clear memory you hold from your days at IGS?

What makes IGS so special is its emphasis on community. Each year I was reminded why I loved IGS with events such as International day and the Arts festival (ArtsFest). To me, they defined the philosophy of IGS – to embrace working with such diverse individuals. The enthusiasm of students, parents, teachers and even the Principal to dress up, show off their international recipes and hear most people conversing in foreign languages, is something I will never forget.

What did you pursue after school? Are you still working in the same field in which you studied?
I went straight from school and completed a Bachelor of Medical Science at Sydney Uni. I then took a few years off, mixing travel, international volunteering, casual work and studying for medical entrance exams.

I began a Master of Speech Pathology, however was offered a place in Medicine and made the big and challenging move to start a new life in Perth to pursue my lifelong dream career. I am in my final year now and have plans to head back home to Sydney...
