HAPPY NEW YEAR!And what a wonderful year 2017 was for Caring for Kiriwina. Our dreams for re-initiating the VBA education program set up by World Vision in the 1980's were realised thanks to the generous support of midwife educators Shea Caplice and Jacqui Andrews, who prepared and delivered the training with much professionalism and love, supported by their back up team Vanessa Palfreeman, Mary Jonmundsson, Doug, Jenni and Jodi Lawton. This amazing team of volunteers have confirmed their commitment to continuing this education program with another week of training booked for the third week of June this year. We learnt an incredible amount during our time on Kiriwina in 2017 and we plan to build on the knowledge foundation of our first visit to provide more in depth training, in particular to the more experienced VBAs. Unfortunately we were not successful in receiving a grant from the Australian embassy in Port Moresby to help fund this trip, and we continue to rely on the generous donations of our supporters to fund both the training and the birthing kits. Stay tuned for information about fund raising activities before we leave in June 2018. Our birthing kit program continues to supply essential life saving items to support the Caring for Kiriwina Village Birth Attendants with their work. There have been major challenges this year delivering the kits as the airport on Kiriwina has been closed for the past 8 months due to damage, we have been informed that the airport is due to reopen at the end of next month, we will keep you updated. We have relied on the continued support of our in country members to transport the kits to the island by boat from the mainland. Help save the lives of the women and children on Kiriwina Caring for Kiriwina would like to thank Passport Eyewear and Capital Chemist Hughes for their incredibly generous donation of 80 pairs of reading and sunglasses to the Kiriwinan people on our last visit. You can see the delight on the Kiriwinans faces when they were able to see something they could not see before. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our on-going commitment to the women and children on Kiriwina Thank you to our Major Sponsors - The Children's Help Fund, Send Hope and Yarralumla Uniting Church Arts and Crafts Committee for continuing their generous support, without which this ongoing vital work for the Kiriwinan people would not be possible. Thank you to Jeff Keating for his tireless efforts in supporting the people of Kiriwina and sourcing funding. We look forward to their ongoing support as we prepare for our next VBA Training Session in June this year.
