I want to highlight one very big one in particular (but don’t forget to save the date for Healthy Steps for CHANGE). That’s the opening of the MacEwan University Health Center. The MUHC is more than a new clinic – it’s a new direction. It was designed from a clean sheet of paper to support the Medical Home model of patient-centred, team-based, proactive care, and to train not only family doctors, but also nurses, medical office assistants, social workers, and psychologists. It’s an exciting transformation, one that is just beginning with the new facility. Now that we have new space to work in, we have the opportunity to work in new ways, and to teach and share province wide and nationally. This issue honours our staff and faculty who pitched in for the team to get the new space up and running. I’m looking forward to future issues about the teamwork that will happen there, and as we create more such facilities over the next few years. - Dr. Lee Green, Chair, Department of Family Medicine Faculty Recognition Dr. Olurotimi Ogunsina Receives Teaching Excellence Award Congratulations to Dr. Olurotimi Ogunsina, who was awarded the Geambasu and Oshodi Award for Teaching Excellence at the Northern Lights Regional Health Center for the 2017-2018 year. The games are meant to enable youth athletes to experience the multi-sport games format, motivate Albertans to achieve a higher level of physical fitness through more active participation in sport, showcase the talents of Albertans in a wide range of sport and activities and provide host communities with a legacy of experienced volunteers and upgraded facilities. For physicians interested in sport medicine, this is a perfect venue to volunteer. The purpose was twofold – both to teach sport medicine to the local physiotherapists and physicians who look after the Ugandan athletes, and to assess university and national team athletes there in consultation. Building Bridges Toward HopeOn Wednesday, August 8 Family Medicine Residents gathered at Poundmaker’s Lodge Treatment Centres in Sturgeon County for the second Indigenous Health Academic Day. This valuable educational opportunity provided residents with insight into culturally appropriate and sensitive healthcare for Indigenous peoples, as well as insight into the historic events in the land now known as Canada that altered their way of life. The theme for this year’s event was Building Bridges Toward Hope. The speakers for the day were Dr. Josie Auger, Dr. Alika Lafontaine, Tibetha Kemble and Kenton Boutillier. Participants had the opportunity to take part in the KAIROS Blanket Exercise, a participatory learning activity that “fosters truth, understanding, respect and reconciliation among Indigenous and non-indigenous people”*. The exercise was followed by an opportunity to debrief and discuss the experience. During lunch, the residents were treated to a performance from world champion hoop dancer, musician and storyteller Dallas Arcand, who spoke about Indigenous cultural practices and demonstrated traditional drumming, dancing and music. Small group discussion sessions were held before the day was brought to a close with a traditional round dance and a giveaway ceremony. Participants await instruction during the KAIROS Blanket Exercise New Liaison Librarian Maria Tan is the new liaison librarian and main contact for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, providing research support, teaching, and consultations.
