In the Sky this week - Summer SolsticeImage via WeatherZone The longest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere is called the Summer Solstice. Our Earth orbits the Sun tilted at an angle of approx. 23 degrees. This changes the length of the day changes throughout the year and produces our seasons. Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere is when the South Pole reaches its maximum tilt towards the Sun. While the Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, it's not the warmest. It takes a little while of summer temperatures for our surrounding oceans and lands to absorb and retain heat. The hottest days of the year in Australia are usually in January - although who knows if that will be happen in 2023 with our crazy weather of late!
