Webex tips: dealing with a slow or
congested internet connection
We have had several reports this week of issues connecting to Webex meetings over the internet and also via the phone dial-in service. In most cases this is due to internet/phone line congestion caused by the large number of people now working from home. Follow the below tips to minimise the impact a slow or congested internet connection can have on your Webex meeting:
- Tip #1 - Close background applications
Even if you're not using them, applications on your device are using precious resources. Before your meeting, close any applications and browser sessions that you are not using for the best experience.
- Tip #2 – Don’t Video Conference over Citrix
Webex is available on your Virtual Desktop if using the Citrix Access Gateway (CAG). However there are times when Citrix may become congested when there are lots of people using it. Open your Webex meeting from outside the Citrix Access Gateway to improve Webex performance.
- Tip #3 Stagger your meetings
Congestion peaks on the hour and half-hour, try starting your meetings at ¼ past or ¼ to the hour to miss this. This tip also applies for those planning to join by phone.
- Tip #4 – Reduce simultaneous streaming activities
If you're joining a meeting and your family is also home, ask them to hold off on that next episode of Netflix until your meeting is over. If possible, consider downloading shows for off-line watching to save valuable bandwidth during your work hours.
- Tip #5 Choose audio over video
Video uses much more internet bandwidth than audio. Webex will suggest or automatically lower your resolution and may eventually turn off your video if the connection slows. If you are noticing connection issues, you should turn off your video to improve performance.
- Tip #6 Switch to call-in audio
If you are still having issues, you can join the meeting using your phone instead. Call in using the dial-in numbers in the meeting invitation. If you join by phone, make sure you mute your microphone and turn down your volume on your Computer, if using this to view content/participants.
If you are having any other Webex issues, including getting setup on Webex Teams, please request support via the ICT Service Desk.
