Spring 2020 Final Exams

Some Recommendations to Support Student Success:

  • Use Canvas Quizzes to create and administer the final exam.
  • Provide a window of opportunity for students to complete the final rather than expect them to be available at a specific time.
  • Use simple test security measures within Canvas, such as a time limit or requiring a password.
  • If you use Proctorio (recently integrated with Canvas), use the simplest Proctorio settings, such as the browser lockdown feature. Do not expect your students to have cameras or microphones for testing security. (Proctorio can’t be used with mobile devices.)
  • Give your students information about what the final exam process will be in advance.

Download Your Canvas Gradebook

The end of the semester will be here soon! You might want to plan some time to be sure you download your final grades from your Canvas gradebooks. It just takes a few steps to download your Canvas gradebook and save a copy. Canvas student data becomes unstable after the end of any given semester, so you may not be able to get back into Canvas to resolve a grade dispute if it should occur at some point in the future.

Follow these instructions to export your gradebook.

Manage Your Canvas Content

You can export content (without student data) from your Canvas class and reuse the content in a future class. It’s a two-step process:

  1. Go to Settings > Export. Follow the prompts and save the file. (This exported file can’t be opened outside of Canvas.)

  2. Go to your upcoming Canvas class and go to Settings > Import. Select Canvas Export File and follow the prompts to import your saved Canvas export file.

Accessibility and University Design for Learning (UDL)

Using instructional materials that are accessible for students with disabilities is a legal obligation for which everyone is responsible.

Here are three things you can do to support all students, not just students who need assistive technology to “access” text or audio instructional materials:

  • Record short “mini” lectures using ConferZoom and share the video, audio, and text transcript file with your students by embedding the file links on a Page in Canvas.

  • If you need “real-time” captioning during a live ConferZoom session, you can ask a volunteer to do the real-time-captioning for any student who can’t “access” the audio portion of the session.

  • Use the free basic Otter.AI application to move your speech to text and then share the resulting processed audio transcript with your students. You can have otter.ai produce a transcript in real-time when speaking with your students, or you can play an existing video and let otter.ai produce a text transcript to provide to your students.

The use of audio files in your instructional materials can support many students who may have disabilities or just may need extra support for cognitive activities. The Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) has published a guide to help you learn more about using audio.
