Image Matters ...

Welcome to the summer edition of my newsletter!

While doing some research on the web, I came across something that got me really fired up and prompted me to put aside my other newsletter ideas and address a subject that is very important to me. Important because it is crucial to every professional that uses imagery to communicate their services.

What did I see that made me feel this way? A beautiful, well designed website for a home building company.

So, what's the problem? Well, stick with me here ...

While on the site, I clicked through the ‘about’ and ‘working with us’ sections. Feeling encouraged by what I was learning, I clicked on the ‘image gallery’ to see examples of the company's projects. And boy, what a let down … lacklustre, amateur photography!

What do I mean? Well, in most cases, it’s the underexposed or overexposed images with crooked lines and unbalanced colour. Spaces that look either too busy or too empty, spaces that fall flat. Images which could actually hurt the presentation of a business. After all, why invest in a professionally designed website if the photography is not up to the same standard?

The image below is a 'snapshot' of a space like many I see on the web. Not very inspiring is it?

I believe an image should capture the essence of a space and not only represent what it actually looks like, but make it look as downright fabulous as it deserves!

The photograph below was crafted to feature real estate agent, Guy Yarkoni, enjoying his newly renovated condo as part of his website rebranding (coming soon). Now the space looks vibrant and inviting!

In our image driven age, consumers expect to see great photography. From your website, to HOUZZ to social media, if you don’t have professional imagery, no one is going to pay attention. We’re bombarded with images. Only the great ones stand out.

I feel very passionate about this issue and it’s what excites me about my job. Yes, I love photography and capturing all of the wonderful projects my clients create. What is also immensely rewarding, is knowing the images help sell my clients and their talents to current and prospective clients. Get them published. Help them win awards. Get their work in front of the people with whom they want to work!

Consider the following from prominent U.S. designer Lauren Liess regarding the impact professional photography has had on her business:

Have your work professionally photographed. I can't stress it enough. When I first started out, I took photos of my work and put them on my website. And no one called me. I visited successful designers' websites and compared mine to theirs and saw that they all had professional photography, and of course, mine didn't. We saved up and hired a photographer and almost immediately, after loading the professional pictures of the same projects, I started getting calls.”

‘Sounds good Leslie, but what if my company doesn’t have the budget to photograph every project?’ Then don’t! Budget for the special projects that showcase what you do best, and what you want to do more of. You don’t need dozens and dozens of images on your website, but the images that are there need to be great – period.

If you'd like help creating images that bring your business and projects to life, contact me about my photography services.

And, as always, if you have any questions or topics you’d like me to address in future newsletters, please get in touch - I'd love to hear from you!

Warmly,

Leslie
