Philanthropy Weekly No Images? Click here The 2019 Philanthropy Meets Parliament Summit - hosted by Philanthropy Australia at Parliament House and Hotel Realm in Canberra last week - examined the myriad of questions surrounding philanthropy in the service of democracy. After two days of intelligent, challenging, wide-ranging and deeply informed debate and discussion, a number of themes emerged that connected the disparate speakers, panels and philosophies. NEWSROOMGST and philanthropic grants and donations A reminder to all recipients of philanthropic grants and donations. The ATO says “If your organisation is registered for GST and receives grant funding (e.g. from a government body or philanthropic foundation), it does not have to pay GST on the funding payment. You only need to pay GST if you make a 'supply' in return for a payment” – which is clearly not the case when you receive philanthropic grants and donations. A number of our trust and foundation members are seeing many instances of receipts being sent to them by grantees where GST has been deducted, as well as seeing progress reports that include financials that report a ‘shortfall’ in project funding due to 10% of the grant being paid to the ATO. GST is not required to be remitted on gifts, and grant payments from philanthropic foundations and donors are deemed to be gifts. The ATO guidelines are very clear. Your accountants and auditors should be picking this up – please check if you are not sure. Please obtain you own tax advice - you could be losing 10% of the value of your grants unnecessarily!
