BC Patient Safety & Quality Council - Wave 3 of Clear
We are excited to let you know that the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council has launched Wave 3 of Clear, which is supporting teams from 51 long-term care homes across British Columbia to address the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, with a focus on reducing the use of antipsychotics, when appropriate.
Over the past four years, many of the 80 care homes that participated in the first two waves of Clear (when it was known as CLeAR: Call for Less Antipsychotics in Residential Care) achieved a steady decline in antipsychotic use that led to evidence of improved quality of life for residents. And most of those care homes have sustained their improvements over the months and years since they participated.
Most recently, 40 care homes participated in Wave 2 from September 2015 through December 2016. Collectively, they made a tremendous impact – reducing or discontinuing antipsychotics prescriptions for 1,001 residents. These results, and many more, can be reviewed in a commissioned evaluation report.
Clear aligns with similar initiatives that may be ongoing in participating care homes, including the Residential Care Initiative being undertaken by your Division of Family Practice. Our aim is to ensure that Clear will complement the RCIs, and not duplicate their work. If you would like to communicate with the care homes in your region that are participating in Clear, here are the team leads:

Please reach out directly your local care home team lead (above) to find out what is going on in your area, or to our clinical lead physicians (emails below) to find out how to become involved.
If you would like to get involved with Clear, please feel free to subscribe to our mailing list, or respond to this email for more information.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
