U Vic SELF-MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS

As a valued part of our health care community, we are sending you links to our monthly “Hot Sheet” that summarizes workshops in your health region. Click on the link below to find out what’s coming up on Vancouver Island:

North Vancouver Island

Please print and post in an appropriate area of your office, or email/fax to other health care providers that may be interested in referring their patients or clients to our programs.  If you would like us to send a selection of our brochures to display in your office let us know by replying to this email.

If you are interested in finding workshops outside of your health region please refer to our website.

In addition to our 6 week Self-Management Workshops we are offering a new program called  the “Self-Management Health Coach Program”.   This program is a telephone-based coaching program to support people living with chronic conditions to become better self-managers, and be able to work towards a health goal.  This is a great option for clients who would prefer a one-to-one program or for those who would like to continue receiving support after they attend one of our 6-week workshops.

Rural Physician Research Grants/Leadership Bursaries

I wanted to share information on a couple of funding opportunities that physicians in the Oceanside area might be interested in as they are specifically for rural physicians. One is a grant program that rural physicians can apply for to conduct research pertaining to rural health in BC and the second is a bursary program for rural physicians interested in developing their leadership skills. These programs are run by the Rural Coordination Centre of BC (RCCbc) and the Rural Education Action Plan (REAP) with the support of the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues. Details on the opportunities are below.

Rural Physician Research Grants
The Rural Physician Research Support Project is a new initiative which aims to empower rural physician researchers – or new aspiring researchers – to pursue innovative rural research and knowledge translation projects contributing to advancing rural health in BC. Through this project, rural physician researchers will be able to apply for research grants of up to $10,000 per year to support research activities. To be eligible, applicants must be a physician with experience practicing rural medicine and demonstrable extensive connections to rural communities. The research must be pertaining to health in rural BC.

To apply for this opportunity, please download the application forms from the Rural Coordination Centre of BC website and submit it to apeltonen@rccbc.ca. The deadline for the next round of submissions is May 31, 2018.

The Rural Physician Research Support Project is run by the Rural Coordination Centre of BC and supported by the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues. For more information about this opportunity contact Adrienne Peltonen at apeltonen@rccbc.ca. Visit www.rccbc.ca for more information about the Rural Coordination Centre of BC.

Rural Physician Leadership Bursaries
The purpose of the Rural Leadership Development Project is to increase opportunities for rural physicians to pursue leadership training and develop the skills and abilities to help bring system improvements that will benefit British Columbia’s rural populations. In addition to access to a formalized leadership program, participants will be offered a mentoring opportunity with a rural leader through UBC CPD’S Rural Physician Mentoring Program. As well, during the course of the training participants will be encouraged to participate as a guest (when invited) in two meetings of groups providing leadership in rural BC (e.g. Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues, Rural Coordination Centre of BC Core, Rural Issues Committee etc.). Such shadowing opportunities have been seen as important in grounding leadership training in real-life contexts.

The Rural Leadership Development Project allows rural physicians to access bursaries of up to $15,000 per year to support their participation in leadership training. To be eligible, applicants must have been working in an RSA Community for at least nine months of the past year and have health authority and community support for the training. The next application deadline is May 31, 2018.

For more information about this bursary program, please visit the RCCbc website or contact Lisa Hetu at the Rural Education Action Plan at 604-827-4188 or reap@familymed.ubc.ca.

BC Patient Safety & Quality Council - Wave 3 of Clear

We are excited to let you know that the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council has launched Wave 3 of Clear, which is supporting teams from 51 long-term care homes across British Columbia to address the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, with a focus on reducing the use of antipsychotics, when appropriate.

Over the past four years, many of the 80 care homes that participated in the first two waves of Clear (when it was known as CLeAR: Call for Less Antipsychotics in Residential Care) achieved a steady decline in antipsychotic use that led to evidence of improved quality of life for residents. And most of those care homes have sustained their improvements over the months and years since they participated.

Most recently, 40 care homes participated in Wave 2 from September 2015 through December 2016. Collectively, they made a tremendous impact – reducing or discontinuing antipsychotics prescriptions for 1,001 residents. These results, and many more, can be reviewed in a commissioned evaluation report.

Clear aligns with similar initiatives that may be ongoing in participating care homes, including the Residential Care Initiative being undertaken by your Division of Family Practice. Our aim is to ensure that Clear will complement the RCIs, and not duplicate their work. If you would like to communicate with the care homes in your region that are participating in Clear, here are the team leads:

Currently we are developing approaches for participating care homes’ physician engagement and support for Clear, and your advice would be tremendously valuable.

Please reach out directly your local care home team lead (above) to find out what is going on in your area, or to our clinical lead physicians (emails below) to find out how to become involved.

If you would like to get involved with Clear, please feel free to subscribe to our mailing list, or respond to this email for more information.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
