Over the Easter period, the pace slows a little for many of us, so it is an opportunity to energise our drive and motivation. MotivationMotivation is such an interesting phenomenon. Whilst we are aware that it is key to achieving our potential and sense of wellbeing, a recent working paper from the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child unpacked the complex machinery of motivation by seeking to uncover what drives children, and what holds them back. They discovered that there are two types of motivation:
Approach motivation is key to most forms of learning, and avoidance motivation, whilst important for survival, can inhibit higher order learning. It is, therefore, necessary to achieve a healthy balance between the two, which can be attained through a supportive developmental process. Whilst our motivations are partially laid out by genetics, they are also shaped by our experiences. It is these experiences which provide such a vital link to developing students, who have the opportunity to cultivate the motivation to learn, improve skills and make good choices. They outline the following strategies as a way to develop a balanced motivation system:
Have a Safe and Restful BreakI hope that you have a safe, restful break and return at the start of Term 2 feeling refreshed and motivated to embrace the PLC experience. Farewell Murray SaundersTomorrow at the Principal's Assembly, we farewell English Teacher and Ferguson (Fergo) House Advisor, Murray Saunders, who has worked at PLC for 29 years! Murray's journey as Ferguson House Advisor began in 1991, with his passion for Fergo growing stronger by the year. He has inspired, mentored and guided students; motivating them to be the best they can be. Join us at tomorrow morning's Assembly, as we celebrate and thank Murray for his 29 years of service to PLC. We wish you a happy and relaxing retirement, Murray. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Deputy Principal Holiday Phone OutageOn Monday 15 April, during the school holidays, the College's phone service will be unavailable from 7.00 am, for approximately two hours, as part of scheduled works. We hope the interruption will be minimal, and we thank you in advance for your understanding. - Stewart Neilson, Information and Learning Technology Manager Easter Service and Principal's AssemblyDate: Tomorrow, Friday 12 April Boarders' MarketDate: Tomorrow, Friday 12 April Mothers' Day BreakfastDate: Friday 10 May OCA Art Exhibition Opening Night Cocktail PartyThe evening includes champagne, Flametree wine, canapes, entertainment and a chance to preview, and be the first to buy, the works of more than 80 artists. Numbers are limited, so please book early. Please note that all parent events are listed in the Communications & Engagement section of Links. “The stone was rolled away from the door, not to permit Christ to come out, but to enable the disciples to go in.” Easter is family time; a time of joining one another on an Easter egg hunt and celebrating the joy of life. For Christians it is also one of the most important festivals. What is your perception of God? Do you accept that He could have supernatural powers? You might or might not believe this. If you believe that Jesus could have risen from the grave, it is plausible that He could move through walls, space and time and that He could have exited the grave without the stone being rolled away. If Jesus were to exit the grave without removing the stone at the entrance, his followers wouldn’t have witnessed the empty grave, hence the stone being rolled away – to help them believe. To help us in our disbelief, God came down to earth and walked amongst us. To this day, God still opens doors and gives us a helping hand regardless of our spiritual base. Easter is more than a joyous Easter egg hunt – it is an attempt by God to engage with us. - Rev Manie Strydom, Chaplain HBF Run for a Reason - Running for RefugeesJoin Team PLC and participate in the HBF Run for a Reason taking place on Sunday 19 May to support Refugees through Red Cross.
