CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Read our construction update to see what has been achieved and what is coming up on the Karangahape Road Enhancements project.

Symonds Street to Liverpool Street

This week, pending traffic management approval, we plan to move to the intersection of Symonds Street and Karangahape Road to complete the new street light and traffic light installation, and construct the new pram crossing.

Liverpool Street to Queen Street

Additional relocation works by utility providers of the exposed services on the corner of Queen Street are required.  Once complete, works to complete the kerbline and cycleway on this corner can be undertaken.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Service diversions to take place by utility providers

Queen Street to Pitt Street

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue with kerb and bus stop construction from the mid block pedestrian crossing towards Queen Street
  • Continue with raingarden construction near Queen Street
  • Plant Nikau trees and at mid block tree pit

Mercury Lane to West Terrace

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Commence construction of the new pram crossing towards Pitt Street, and install paving and tactiles at Mercury Lane corner
  • Cutover fibre to new traffic control box at West Terrace/Day Street crossing
  • Transfer signal cables from the old traffic light cabinet to the new cabinet at West Terrace/Day Street crossing

Cobden Street to Newton Road

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue with raingarden construction after removal of the redundant watermain
  • Prepare for ducting and kerbline installation

Change in temporary traffic management - Cobden Street

From Monday 2 November 2020, there will be no right turn into Cobden Street from Karangahape Road.  This is to allow for drainage works to be undertaken.  Traffic exiting Cobden Street can turn either left  or right at all times.

While Cobden Street will be down to one lane - two way access will be allowed.  This means a signalised stop/go operation will be in place during this work.

Edinburgh Street to Newton Road

The traffic management plan for the section between Edinburgh Street and Newton Road is approved and works have commenced today.  Temporary traffic management and fencing has been set up and the construction team is commencing demolition, starting with saw cutting the carriageway and footpath.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Plant Pohutakawa Mistral near Joy Bong Thai Restaurant
  • Finalise low level planting in all the rain gardens in this section

Service trenches across carriageway:

Part of the upgrade includes traffic lights, street lights and future proofing ducting, and stormwater connections across the carriageway of Karangahape Road. These works require sections of Karangahape Road to be closed, with detours in place for vehicles.

Upcoming night works - what to expect:

This week enabling works (saw cutting the carriageway) for the service trenches are taking place at:

  • Queen Street and Karangahape Road intersection
  • The mid-block pedestrian crossing, between Queen Street and Pitt Street

Works are planned for Thursday 29 October and Sunday 1 November 2020 nights from 19:30 - 06:00. (Friday 30 October and Saturday 31 October are backup dates in case of inclement weather conditions).

These works will be undertaken at night when traffic volumes are low. A change in lane layout will be required while this work is taking place, however vehicle and footpath access will be maintained around the work.

Please note there will be intermittent medium to high volume noise - saw cutting,  trucks moving and loading heavy equipment, but we will endeavour to have the noisy work complete by 10:30pm.

Upcoming works - Asphalt Resurfacing:  Pitt Street to Symonds Street

Final resurfacing of the road, as part of the completion of the enhancement work currently being undertaken.

The resurfacing work is being split into several phases: the section between Pitt Street and Queen Street is the first phase, and Queen Street to Symonds Street is the second phase.  The remaining section from Pitt Street to Ponsonby Road will be done near the end of the enhancement project.

This resurfacing process is known as "mill and fill".  The existing asphalt surface is "milled" off to achieve an even surface, removes old trench marks  and "ghost" road-markings.  This is then replaced with a new asphalt layer (fill) on the entire width of the road.  Once this is complete the final road markings will be done.

Heavy machinery is used to do this work.  It is anticipated that this work will be completed over a couple of weeks.

These works require sections of Karangahape Road to be closed, with detours in place for vehicles. Karangahape Road is a main arterial route during the day and therefore these works will be undertaken at night when traffic volumes are low. Every morning works will be finished in sections to ensure there is a trafficable surface during the day.

During the day on street parking will be removed daily on the hours prior to the works commencement to enable the machine access.

It is important to note that vehicle and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the day.

This work is expected to commence in November and will take a few nights to complete - the details will be shared in upcoming newsletters.
