INTRODUCING THE STOKE ON TRENT RESEARCH SCHOOL

The Keele and North Staffordshire Alliance are delighted to be enabling the Stoke on Trent Research School (RS). This is YOUR Research School and so we will be thrilled to meet many of you at our launch event on Monday 27th November [please see the link below in the ‘Events and Training’ part of the newsletter]. We have been delighted that colleagues have already been in touch to share their passion for evidence-based practice. This brings schools closer to appropriate research so that we can all make an informed positive difference through our teaching.  The Research Schools Network is a collaboration between the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), the Institute for Effective Education (IEE) and the DfE.  Over the next three years the RS will aim to enrich, enhance and extend existing local networks through a focus on school-led support for evidence-based practice.

A significant element of or work will particularly focus on the priorities identified by the Stoke-on-Trent Opportunity Area Board. These are due to be published early in 2018.  Our work will include using EEF and IEE guidance and materials in to enrich Key Stage 2/3 transition activities in English Maths and Science. We are very much looking forward to working with many of you in relation to this.

More details about the Stoke on Trent Research School can be found here.

LEARNING ABOUT CULTURE RESEARCH TRIALS

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) recently announced a series of research trials which will be led by five organisations leading projects that will include 9000 pupils in 400 schools across England.

The central focus of the research seeks to explore how different cultural learning approaches can help boost primary pupils’ achievement.

The delivery and evaluation of the program is being funded through a partnership between the RSA and the EEF, with support from Arts Council England, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Foyle Foundation and Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

The five grants have been awarded to:

Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE)
London Bubble

Paradigm Arts

The Young Journalist Academy
Tees Valley Music Service

First Thing Music

If you would like to take part in a research trial then you can find further information about the program here.

Schools interested in taking part in any of the new trials should contact the delivery organisations directly. However, if you would like to discuss the implications of being part of a trial do please contact the Stoke-on-Trent Research School. We will be very happy to support you.

NEW GUIDANCE TO IMPROVE MATHS TEACHING FOR 7 – 14 YEAR OLDS
Good maths skills are essential for everyday life and a range of careers. Yet there remains a large and persistent attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) believes the best way to change this is through better use of evidence: looking at what has – and has not – worked in the past.

To support good maths teaching in Key Stages 2 and 3, they’ve published new guidance that gives schools and teachers practical ‘do’s and don’ts’ of great maths teaching.

The report covers eight practical and evidence-based recommendations on areas where there is evidence that schools can use to make a significant difference to pupils’ learning. It includes guidance on:

  • developing pupils’ problem solving skills;
  • using assessment to make a difference to pupils’ learning; and
  • effective use of manipulatives (physical objects used to teach maths).

The report is free to access and available here

CAN EVIDENCE REALLY INFORM PRACTICE?

The Sutton Trust–EEF Teaching and Learning Toolkit provides teachers and school leaders with an accessible summary of thousands of individual pieces of academic research to help them inform their teaching practice. In this blog post, John Tomsett, recounts an experience of using evidence from the Toolkit to source effective interventions to inform practice and improve pupil outcomes.

WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE ON HELPING CHILDREN WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH MATHS?

Many children struggle with maths, and taking early action can be key to helping to improve their mathematics ability. However, as children’s difficulties with maths vary, it is important to identify their individual difficulties and weaknesses, and target any intervention appropriately. Teaching in the intervention should be explicit and systematic. It is also recommended that interventions include a regular time dedicated to building fluent retrieval of basic arithmetic facts. There is good evidence that interventions should include opportunities for pupils to work with visual representation of mathematical ideas and be taught how to solve word problems.
