Chinese Hackers Used Anthropic’s AI to Automate Cyberattacks

Happy Friday. China’s state-sponsored hackers used AI from Anthropic to automate break-ins of major corporations and foreign governments during a September hacking campaign, the company said Thursday.

Hackers have been using AI for years now to conduct individual tasks such as crafting phishing emails, but in this instance 80% to 90% of the attack was automated, with humans only intervening in a handful of decision points. Read the full WSJ story.

Cyberattack costs to double at healthcare tech provider Conduent. The company, which spent $25 million early this year responding to a hack, has since spent $9 million more and anticipates shelling out another $16 million by the end of March, according to its latest quarterly earnings report. (TechTarget)

  • Conduent, a government contractor, is notifying clients that their patients have likely had their data breached. The company hasn't said how many individuals are affected in total. Notices to regulators in Montana, Oregon and Texas indicate it is 5.2 million in those states. 
  • Florham Park, N.J.-based Conduent detected the attack in January and disclosed it in April. Investigators later pegged the origin at October 2024.
  • "It is possible that future risks and uncertainties resulting from the January 2025 Cyber Event, including those related to impacted data, litigation, reputational harm, and regulatory actions, could adversely affect the Company’s financial condition or results of operations," Conduent said in the earnings report. 

Pro-Russia hackers claimed to be behind distributed denial-of-service attacks on the websites of the Danish government and defense companies. The sites experienced intermittent outages Thursday. Denmark is a strong supporter of Ukraine in its war with Russia. (Barron's)

Further disclosure: The Washington Post—a victim of the recent hack of Oracle's E-Business Suite software—is notifying more than 9,700 current and former employees and contractors that their personal data and bank account numbers were compromised during the incident.

  • The media company was breached this summer, along with several other companies that also use the vulnerable Oracle product, including GlobalLogic, a unit of Hitachi that provides tech services. (Bleeping Computer)

Percentage of 335 family offices hacked in the past year, according to research from Bank of America. Forty percent of those said the incident was "moderate to extremely impactful on family assets."
