Click here Dear Friend of PLC A Message from the Head PrefectIn early January of this year, Lizzie McLarty (Deputy Head Prefect) and I attended a leadership conference and workshop conducted by Lead at Bond University in Queensland. The three-day conference was attended by over 140 girls from various parts of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, all of whom had been appointed to leadership roles for the final year of schooling. As well as being a wonderful opportunity to connect with girls from such a diverse background and share their experiences and goals for 2018, the conference encouraged us to focus on three elements of leadership – being yourself, leading by example and making a difference to your community. In considering these elements, we were encouraged to accept that part of being a leader is to develop the confidence of self–acceptance and the realisation that, whatever challenges you face, you can only be yourself – the best version of yourself – but to have the courage of your own convictions. We were also reminded of the importance of leading by example, even when there is an easier or quicker option, to remember that you are a representative of your school, your family, your team and your actions have consequences. We were also given a timely reminder of the importance of community and to avoid becoming overly introspective and losing sight of the value of those around us whose wants and needs may be very different from our own. I am very grateful for the wonderful opportunity to attend this conference. I hope to encourage all PLC girls to be mindful of these elements which I believe are valuable, not only to our school leaders, but to all girls as they face the challenges that 2018 will undoubtedly bring. -Eliza Donaldson, Head Prefect Friday 30 MarchGood Friday Monday 2 AprilEaster Monday Wednesday 4 AprilPLC Foundation AGM, 6.00 pm, RSVP: Suzanne Pelczar, PLC Foundation Co-ordinator, 9424 6534 Saturday 7 AprilTanzania Parent Quiz Night, 6.30 pm, Scotch College Dickinson Centre Friday 13 AprilBoarders Market, 7.30 am - 11.30 am Friday 25 MayOCA Art Exhibition Opening Night Cocktail Party 6.00 pm – 9.00 pm Friday 25 May to Sunday 27 MayPLC OCA Art Exhibition, find out more here Thursday 31 May Parents@PLC Annual Tennis Morning, save the date Friday 26 OctoberOpen Garden Day, save the date Volunteers required to join the committee: Art/Music Co-ordinator - Organising the art and music on the day with great support from the Creative/Performing Arts Department. We also encourage your daughter to attend with you so that she can contribute to and take on board any suggestions her teachers make. In order to keep the evening running smoothly and to enable you to get the most out of your 7 minute meetings, please forward any specific questions you may have to your daughter’s Learning Co-ordinator. They will forward to the relevant teacher in order for them to prepare for the evening. Lighthouse Grand OpeningThis exciting event is fast approaching. On Friday 6 April, all girls are asked to wear their PLC Sports uniform so that they are able to participate fully in the activities on offer. Given that the more formal part of the event will take place outdoors, girls must have a hat. I would suggest the sports cap might be more appropriate than the panama which is more appropriate as an accessory to the regular school uniform. If girls do not have a sports cap, however, they will need to wear their panama on the day. - Sharon Anderson, Head of Senior School Instrumental and Vocal Lessons - Term 2Congratulations to all students for their hard work and dedication to their music study throughout Term 1. Please note that any cancellations of instrumental or vocal lessons for Term 2 should be received by the Music Department via music@plc.wa.edu.au by Wednesday 4 April, otherwise students will automatically be timetabled for Term 2 and tuition fees applied. The Wolves - A Play by Sarah DeLappeThis April, the Year 11s bring you a 2017 Pulitzer Prize finalist production, The Wolves, a fly-on-the-wall look at a girls’ high school soccer team as they go through their warm-ups. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigour of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals. "The scary, exhilarating brightness of raw adolescence emanates from every scene of this uncannily assured first play by Sarah DeLappe." - The New York Times Date: Tuesday 10 April & Wednesday 11 April 2018 Please note that due to mature themes and the use of some strong language, this play is not suitable for audiences below Year 10. IB Diploma - Theory of Knowledge (TOK)In past years, our Diploma students have benefited enormously from the insight of individuals working in particular fields and disciplines. We have received presentations from historians, physicists, forensic scientists, economists, artists, composers, the list goes on. In each case, we have found that practitioners provide us with fabulous insights and perspectives that differ from the theoretical understanding that schools provide. If you are willing to devote some of your valuable time, to speak with the TOK students, please contact me at dkerrigan@plc.wa.edu.au so that I can arrange a suitable opportunity.
