Announcing the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra

Have you heard the news today? (Oh yeah!)

We have a wonderful late addition to our festival program - one of the world’s most dynamic and prestigious orchestras, the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra.

With a unique repertoire that marries the Chinese aesthete with western compositional techniques, this acclaimed, vibrant and accomplished orchestra has given more than 1300 performances in 80 cities throughout China and abroad. It prides itself on beating the classical music drum, particularly for the ears of younger generations.

Award winning chief conductor Renchang Fu studied extensively in Shanghai and Germany. He brings his carefully cultivated sensitivities to the orchestra’s fore and to its interpretations of the beloved music of China and Taiwan.

This is a rare and wonderful opportunity to experience one of China’s favourite orchestras. Children especially welcome.

Portraits in Motion

The earliest form of film – the flipbook – is revived by a travelling minstrel whose music is in his pictures.

Volker Gerling has walked 3,500km over 13 years and had thousands of human encounters in search of lost moments.
He has compiled these intimate moments into flipbooks and now presents the best of them to audiences all over the world.

Using his flipbooks, a projector and his elegant humour, he creates a narrated ‘thumb cinema’ that exposes what the rushing world doesn’t see.

A gentle meeting of cinema, photography and story.

Paris Combo

Paris Combo’s Belle Du Berry and David Lewis were seen in and around Wrest Point just prior to Christmas on a whistle stop promotional tour as they prepare for the next leg of their world tour which includes two performances as a part of Ten Days on the Island Festival 2017.

Belle and David also popped into the ABC Studios for a performance live on the radio that sent social media alight with adoration for the French Quintet.

Suffice to say that we are getting pretty excited about what is in store when they perform at the Burnie Arts and Function Centre on Wednesday 22 March and Wrest Point Entertainment Centre on Thursday 23 March.
