Salesforce Nears $8 Billion Deal for Informatica

Good morning, CIOs. Salesforce is nearing a roughly $8 billion deal for data-management software firm Informatica, a reset of earlier talks between the two companies that fizzled in 2024. 

Salesforce is expected to pay $25 per share for Informatica, people familiar with the deal tell the WSJ's Lauren Thomas. It is set to be announced later Tuesday, they said.  

Informatica helps companies manage their data across systems both in the cloud and on site, allowing organizations to better analyze the data they collect.

The deal could help Salesforce with its Agentforce offering, software launched last year that enables companies to build and deploy AI agents. The company in February said it had closed 5,000 Agentforce deals since October.

The two companies last year discussed a deal that could have valued Informatica in the neighborhood of $10 billion. After the companies couldn’t agree on terms, the talks fell apart. Read the story.

Data company RealPage is facing state and local efforts to ban its algorithmic pricing system for landlords in the rental-apartment market. But the WSJ reports that a provision in Republicans’ mega tax bill that bans state and local governments from regulating AI and automated decision systems could throw the company a lifeline.

Documents reviewed by the Journal show how self-driving truck startup TuSimple shared with Chinese partners an array of data that amounted to the design of an American-made autonomous driving system. The sharing continued between when TuSimple signed a national security agreement with the U.S. government in February 2022, and its deadline to comply six months later. TuSimple shut down its U.S. operations in December 2023. 

Apple stepped up efforts in recent weeks to fight Texas legislation that would require the iPhone-maker to verify ages of device users. WSJ reports that Tim Cook called Texas Gov. Greg Abbott earlier this month to ask for changes to the legislation or, failing that, for a veto. Abbott has yet to say whether he will sign it.

Xiaomi said its first-quarter net profit more than doubled from a year earlier, buoyed by robust sales of its smartphones and electric vehicles despite demand headwinds, WSJ reports.

New-car registrations for Tesla models in the European Union plunged nearly 53% for a fourth consecutive month in April as the company struggled to cash in on a growing EV market, WSJ reports.

A crypto investor was arrested for kidnapping and holding a man inside a luxury townhouse in Manhattan and torturing him to get the man's Bitcoin password, the NY Times reports.
