Waterlow Hall Newsletter No 8
October 2019

Campaign & Project News

Welcome to our 8th Newsletter about our Waterlow Hall Project and Campaign. This is sent to our whole community - alumnae, parents, friends of the school and former staff  - to keep you up to date with our progress. I can't wait to open the doors to our new Waterlow Hall in early 2020. It means we have just a few months left to raise the remaining funds so there is no time to lose. The campaign has been a true community effort. More than 500 people have made a contribution and it has been such a pleasure to share this project with everyone including our new parents, many of whom have already contributed.

My dog and I have promised to go running for the Waterlow Hall auction. Ms Spencer is giving up her 'headship for a day' to a lucky bidder - so I am asking all of you to get involved and help us in whatever way you can. At the start of this journey, I was told that “Fundraising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving”.  We have enjoyed every minute of our campaign so far and I hope you will share our joy as you read this newsletter!

When the going gets tough....

The doors are closed, the floor has been stripped back to the original sportshall markings, construction of our Steinway store and the Production and Radio suites is underway. For regular updates on the progress follow the news on the Waterlow Hall website.

Give a little bit

Over the summer 100 people chose to 'Shine a Light', 20 people 'Took a Seat' and new parents joined our '10 from 10 in 10' group. We now have £390,000 remaining to raise. The project is underway and the costs are coming in so please help us to reach our target to secure everything we need in the hall.

Together

Our campaign board receptions have helped us to reach out to everyone in our community about this project. We welcomed our new parents at two events in September and shared our plans for the hall and the future at South Hampstead. Special thanks must go to our hosts and to Camille (Y7) and Michaela (Y13) who joined us to speak to the parents.

Sit and wonder

For the first time you will be able to see pupils perform from our tiered retractable seating in the new hall. Make a donation to our 'Take a Seat' campaign and you can have a name recorded on a seat. Look out for our auction when one lucky bidder will be able to  secure not just names but also two front row seats for every performance they wish to attend next year.

A huge thanks to our Gala Dinner reception partner Charles Stanley Wealth Management. Their bespoke cocktail has been mixed and sampled ready for the big night on the 16th November. Guests will be welcomed at the reception with a choice of Prosecco or an iconic (and very delicious) Charles Stanley cocktail.

Feeling good

Did you know that all revenue generated by our new Waterlow Hall will be invested directly back into our bursary fund. So any donation you make now, doesn't just help us finish the hall but will also be supporting future pupils who could not otherwise afford to come to South Hampstead.

I remember you

The Shine a light Club wrote personal letters to some of our alumnae this term asking them to remember their favorite teachers and sponsor a place for them on our 'Map of Stars'. If you would like to 'Shine a Light' on your favorite teacher then please join our appeal.

A perfect match

Did you know that the GDST is a registered Charity (no.306983). That means that if you are a UK Taxpayer your donation is eligible for gift aid and, if you work for a company with a MATCHED GIVING scheme you could double your donation at no extra cost. Find out if your company offers this here.

It's a man's world

Parents donate more to their son's schools than to their daughter's. Girls schools have lagged behind for many years when it comes to building a culture of philanthropy and endowment funds. But, thanks to you, we are bucking the trend here at South Hampstead and with over £2.6 million raised we are proving that it is no longer 'a man's world'.

Alumnae Events
Your song

We are already planning many events to celebrate the opening of our new hall and we want to invite everyone to join us for these. On Sunday 8th March 2020, we will be holding an Alumnae Reunion and a 'Come and Sing' for all our former pupils, staff and friends of the school. So, if you would like to join the choir and 'raise the roof' on our new hall, please let us know.
