A Note From Our Principal

Dear OLV Family,

What a successful first quarter of the school year! The students were in class five days a week, and learning was flourishing! It was so refreshing to welcome the students back to the building after so many months away, and to see so much work and so many decisions come to fruition.

Our New Chapel!

Our new chapel is done and it is absolutely beautiful! Students and teachers have already been visiting the chapel and have been in awe of what a special place this now is. We are so grateful to Mr. & Mrs. Roshetko (parents to Timothy, 1st grade), the OLV Knights of Columbus and fellow parishioners Mark Woodard, Pat Lynch, Fred Gustin, Mel Evans, Charles Gagliano, Greg Grey, and Wayne Perrin for their role in putting this chapel together. We are also grateful to the many donors who made this possible, particularly Archbishop Marino who graciously donated the stunning crucifix that provides the backdrop for the altar. This is a wonderful addition to our school and we look forward to the many opportunities the chapel will provide for the enrichment of our spiritual lives at OLV.

Don't forget to mention OLV when you order to ensure the school gets credit!

Mrs. Steele's fifth grade learns about mixtures using paper chromatography.

First grade created an echolocation experience as a culminating activity of a unit on sound.

Second grade practiced many science and math concepts using pumpkins. They measured circumference, height and weight; made predictions about how many seeds were inside and then compared their predictions to the actual amount after scooping out the inside!

Flexibility - A Theme for 2020

We have been very diligent this year to protect our students and staff. When a family member became ill with COVID-19, Mrs. Hagelskamp had to be out a few days as a precautionary measure, but that didn't stop math class for middle school! Classes continued as usual with Mrs. Hagelskamp teaching remotely. There was always a faculty member or a substitute in the classroom, and the students handled the adjustment exceptionally well.

Something new is happening at OLV! Our courtyard is being transformed into an Outdoor Classroom! The project, headed by Kirk and Allison Creel,  will be a wonderful supplement to various lessons for all our students. There will be eight separate areas for the children to use. A sensory garden which will be filled with plants and other items to taste, touch, hear and smell. Two vegetable raised beds for kids to see and taste seasonal vegetables. A songbird area with lots of bird houses and various feeders to encourage lots of diversity. A weather station where kids will have the opportunity to announce the day’s weather to the school during morning announcements. A measuring wall provided by the art teacher with the long-term goal of changing what is measured every month. The butterfly garden is the 2nd grade class’s special project but it will be tweaked to help in planting. A pollinator garden to help with all our yummy vegetables and Saints garden to honor a few Saints near and dear to us. There will also be a large educational Kiosk that will tell what is growing and gives more information about each area.
Many thanks to all who have already donated to this exciting project and to our American Heritage Girls troop for all their hard work recently! With their fine efforts, several of the areas are taking shape. In addition to working on the weather station, sensory garden, vegetable planter, and the birding station, two of the planned benches were assembled. These benches, (which can either be a bench or a work table), are being dedicated to Kiera Bailey and Mrs. Hobbs from the 2019-2020 4th grade class. Four more benches are in the works and will be added as we are able.
If you are still interested in donating to this project, click the button below to find items that are still needed to make this a success. If you are interested in purchasing specific plants, or have any other questions, please contact Allison Creel at aplantdork@gmail.com. Be on the lookout for a sign up for our next workday (most likely in December)! Many hands make light work!

Principal For a Day!

Have you ever wanted to be the boss for a day? Well, three lucky students have recently had that opportunity thanks to someone winning that item for them at our last BALL! Owen Maloney and John and Ashley Fey each had a day of making the rules, having a private lunch with Mr. Rothery, and enjoying various other perks of the job. All of our "bosses" did an outstanding job being principal and had a great time.

Coaching For Kids

Coaching For Kids is an extracurricular, social emotional after school program. This faith-based program was created by John Carroll graduate Sarah Bailey to promote and teach social and emotional intelligence and to help teach tools and strategies to guide young children through life’s social emotional journeys. With Coaching For Kids' new virtual learning opportunity, classes will be offered to students throughout the Birmingham area.  Specific virtual class times for students attending Diocese of Birmingham Catholic Schools have also been established in hopes that this will also provide a time for our Catholic school students to get to know each other and create community throughout the Diocese.
