News from Management & Entrepreneurship

Management & Entrepreneurship students,

We will be featuring members of our M&E advisory board each week. This week we're featuring David Youngblood CFO of Strategic Acquisitions Group. Check out the video interview HERE.

We want your ideas!

In February, we held our first "Pop Up" course and it was a huge success. A pop up course is a one-hour credit course held on a Saturday on a specific topic. Our first course was a Family Business Bootcamp and included

• Knowledge about what makes family businesses successful;
• Awareness and navigation of common “landmines” in family businesses;
• Conversations with local executives who have experience as a family member or non-family member in growing Knoxville-area companies;
• Connection of learning to your family business or a family business of interest to you.

We would like to do another pop up course and would like your help on the subject matter. What subjects would YOU like to see discussed?

Please send your ideas to Department Head, Anne Smith at asmith51@utk.edu

We are looking forward to seeing your ideas!

Buffalo Cauliflower

Looking for something new in the kitchen?

Since you are staying in your homes more these days, and maybe not eating as healthy as you used to, we thought you might enjoy a new recipe to try.

Buffalo cauliflower

1 head of fresh cauliflower
2/3 cup almond flour
Salt and pepper to taste
Garlic powder or fresh squeezed garlic

Sauce: ¼ cup butter melted
¼ to ½ cup favorite medium to hot sauce.
I used sirachi. Mix melted butter and sauce for second coat on cauliflower.

Preheat oven to 425.
Chop cauliflower into florets not too small.
Mix flour, salt and pepper and garlic and ¼ cup water. Roll
The cauliflower in the flour mixture and coat. Place on a greased jelly roll
Pan evenly. Bake about 18 to 20 minutes checking about 15, depending on your pan and oven hotness.
Pull out and roll in the butter sirachi mixture and put back in oven for about 15 minutes.
Serve with a burger or steak or use as a side dish.

The Barkley Marathons

Need a distraction?

Want a distraction of a quirky documentary with East Tn connection? Watch “The Barkley Marathons” on Netflix. To get away for an afternoon this week, I took a jaunt up to Frozen Head State Park where the documentary takes place. A nice distraction with connections to this area, plus flat out interesting! We’ve asked faculty to share books, movies or other entertainment to take your mind off the virus.

A Good Read

Look for small wins over radical shifts in today’s environment

In the 1980s, the great social psychologist Karl Weick wrote a paper about the importance of small wins. Weick argued that some problems can be cognitively and emotionally overwhelming. In these cases, people may find it very difficult to make progress toward addressing the issue and achieving their goals. Weick advocated breaking down large, complex problems and goals into smaller, intermediate objectives. Pursuing a small wins strategy could then help people achieve their goals, but lowering stress, creating a powerful sense of accomplishment, and motivating people to continue working on a tough project.

Here's an excerpt from that paper:

A small win is a concrete, complete, implemented outcome of moderate importance. By itself, one small win may seem unimportant. A series of wins at small but significant tasks, however, reveals a pattern that may attract allies, deter opponents, and lower resistance to subsequent proposals. Small wins are controllable opportunities that produce visible results.

The idea of small wins seems more important than ever right now, amidst the COVID-19 crisis. It's easy to feel overwhelmed at times. Thinking in terms of concrete small wins may help us work toward longer term, stretch goals as well as to tackle very challenging projects.
