What is Banned Books Week?

Since 1982, it is an annual, weekly celebration honoring the freedom to read. Librarians, publishers, bookstores, teachers and readers come together to promote free and open access to information.

The 2019 theme is to "Keep the Light On" since "Censorship Leaves Us in the Dark."

The Library/LRC in Visalia, Tulare and Hanford will have bookmarks available and posters promoting awareness.

Watch the video to see the top 11 Most Challenged Books of 2018 or visit ALA to read the full list.

"The best defense of censorship is knowledge and awareness. By learning to recognize censorship when you see it, you can help to protect brave & uncompromising literature..."

Where can I read more?

The Library/LRC carries a lot of hard-copy books that have been previously or currently challenged. These are free for faculty and staff to check out all semester long. No library card is required.

Or, view our EBSCO eBook fiction collection for a variety of electronic books. Choose fiction, or any topic of your choice, on the left hand column under "Browse by Category" to narrow your selection. Looking for a specific title or author? Use the top search bar.

Our full list of free databases may be found here.

The Library/LRC was awarded $10,000 from Foundation for continued Kanopy database funding for 2019 - 2020.

Creative Commons Certification Story Maps

One of the biggest benefits of using open teaching materials is that you can legally copy, share and distribute these resources to your students. This is made possible by Creative Commons licensing. See the presentation above for more information on what CC licensing is, how it works, and how it helps faculty and students.

Library/LRC Help: Online Guide

not just for Distance Education

View the Library/LRC Help: Online LibGuide to connect to our services, no matter the location.  This guide was originally developed for online courses, but can be beneficial for any student/faculty member.  We know that there are many reasons why coming to a physical location can be a barrier and we want to raise awareness of the many avenues we have to support you and your students.

Faculty, if you would like to embed this (or another) guide into your Canvas shell, we have attached directions.
