CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Read our construction update to see what has been achieved and what is coming up on the Karangahape Road Enhancements project. 

 

Symonds Street to Upper Queen Street

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • In a small section by the corner of Upper Queen Street, the team is continuing to build a traffic island for the new traffic lights and install footpath tactiles (textured paving to assist visually impaired pedestrians at crossings).
 

Upper Queen Street to Mercury Lane

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue work on the Upper Queen Street corner to remove the existing slip lane, connect the cycleway and reconstruct the new wider footpath
  • Continue to connect ducting, cycleway, kerb and channel and paving across mid-block pedestrian crossing
  • From today, there will be a slight change to the access at the mid-block pedestrian crossing. Access will remain, however to undertake the works in this area, the crossing will be moved towards Upper Queen Street by approximately 3 meters - illustrated below. 
 

    Ponsonby Road to Hereford Street

    Over the weekend the left-hand lane on Karangahape Road between Ponsonby Road and Hereford Street was reopened and the loading zone reinstated.  Bike racks have been installed in this section as well.

    Upcoming night works - what to expect:

    • This week, work will commence to excavate services for new street light foundations near Joy Bong Thai Restaurant and Mobil. We will be using the air vacuum excavator to safely excavate around services. This work will be undertaken each night until 10:30pm

    Upcoming work what to expect (after night work):

    • Complete the footpath near Expert Shoe Repairs after the light foundations are complete

    Hereford Street to Howe Street 

    Over the weekend, the left-hand lane on Karangahape Road between Hereford Street and Howe Street was reopened and fencing was removed up to Howe Street corner. Some fencing remains around raingardens for the safety of pedestrians.  Bike racks have been installed in this section as well.

    Upcoming works - what to expect:

    • Continue with rain garden, garden lights and street light installation

    • Continue with kerb preparation work and ducting across Howe Street

     

    Howe Street to the Overbridge

    The left-hand lane on Karangahape Road between Howe Street and the overbridge was reopened over the weekend.  

    A change in pedestrian management on the corner of Howe Street was set up to facilitate the safe movement of pedestrians while we continue with the ducting installation across Howe Street.

    Upcoming works - what to expect:

    • Continue with rain garden and street light installation

    • Continue with kerb preparation work and ducting across Howe Street

    Upcoming night works - what to expect:

    • This week, work will commence to excavate services for new street light foundations near Merge Cafe. We will be using the air vacuum excavator to safely excavate around services. This work will take one night this week and be complete  by 10:30pm
     

      Overbridge

      Overbridge - North side of Karangahape Road

      The left-hand lane on Karangahape Road over the overbridge was reopened and fencing removed. The bus stop is now open and operational.

      Overbridge - South side of Karangahape Road

      Upcoming works - what to expect:

      • Removal of the bus shelters
      • Removal of the asphalt on the carriageway
        This involves a saw cut along the carriageway, before the asphalt is lifted off
      • Temporary Bus Service Relocation
        The bus stops in this location have been relocated further along Karangahape Road, between Edinburgh Street and Gundry Street. Ambassadors are in place to assist with queries.

      Symonds Street to Queen Street

      Today work commenced in the section from Symonds Street to Liverpool Street.

      For most of this stage, construction is in the carriageway and the outer edge of the footpath, however there will be footpath reconstruction on the intersections at Liverpool Street and Queen Street.  The bus stop at this location has been removed but service will be maintained along Karangahape Road.

      Upcoming works - what to expect:

      • Sawcutting and demolition and installation of underground services

       

      STAGING & LOADING ZONES

      Below is a map of the Karangahape Road precinct showing the construction stages, temporary bus stop relocations and loading zones.

      On Friday 20 March 2020, the team is expected to move (subject to approvals) into the section from Mercury Lane to West Terrace. For most of this stage, construction is in the carriageway and the outer edge of the footpath, however there will be footpath reconstruction and construction of speed tables on the intersections of East Street and West Terrace with Karangahape Road. 

      Auckland Transport’s parking enforcement is working to ensure parking is being correctly used throughout the Karangahape Road precinct.  If you have a request for parking enforcement, please call Auckland Council on 09 301 0101.
